The camera is smaller and lighter than practically all dSLRs out there. Of course there will be a quality difference, but there are always tradeoffs. When I took this camera with me on my honeymoon to Japan, I looked at all the tourists carrying HUGE bags of camera gear and thought that they looked tired and uncomfortable from carrying around all that glass. On top of this, you get 720p video and a nice shooting range with that 18x zoom. It was the best of both the point and shoot portability and slr quality (and video).

InfinityPlusOne

Comments on Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 superzoom reviewed: crème de la crème

A new FZ28 is $400CAD and I assume the FZ35 will be at about the $450CAD mark. Name one dSLR that can deliver the functionality, versitility, and results that this camera provide for anywhere near that price range.
Also, I take my FZ18 with me everywhere. It's very light, never gets dust/dirt in it, is fast to get up and running for any shot (no lens swaps), durable (no moving mirrors or carefully aligned prisms), and it fits in my camelback. I take it mountainbiking without worrying about it breaking, I take it on camping and canoe trips, I take it hiking, and I take it along for social things where anything more than a quick P&S for snapping shots with friends is just awkward.

Saying that you should just buy a dSLR is like saying that you should buy a hard-wired land line telephone instead of a cellphone because the call quality will be slightly better.

Jorvay

Comments on Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 superzoom reviewed: crème de la crème

Panasonic FTW! I love my FZ 28. Used it a lot, and it is much lighter than entry level DSLRs (with lens, of course). You hit the nail on the head. I'm not sure why so many people here think that you have choose between a dSLR or a super-zoom, or even a small point&shoot. Budget may be a limiting factor, but otherwise why have only one camera? They serve different purposes. You can't beat a good SLR for filming sports or for when you have the time to really frame a shot. But who wants to lug one around everywhere. The super-zoom is a nice compromise when you still want a decent lens for casual photography, or for a less technical member of your family to use. And the point and shoot is just great for dropping in you pocket at a whim and for trips to the beach or water park, or anyplace where a larger camera is a hassle.

glenn s

Comments on Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 superzoom reviewed: crème de la crème

Just as Devil's Advocate, but I have certainly heard of DSLR users being treated as "professional" photographers and therefore treated differently to people with a compact camera.

Kelmon

Comments on Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 superzoom reviewed: crème de la crème

Panasonic is on a roll!

Now reveal us your Micro four thirds!

xValentine

Comments on Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 superzoom reviewed: crème de la crème

Sad thought of the day: does this mean that Panasonic won't be releasing a successor to the FZ50?

Jorvay

Comments on Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 superzoom reviewed: crème de la crème

Too bad Panasonic is locking their cameras down to allow only their batteries to work. I will miss that camera dearly.)

G1 is much more expensive, almost twice as much as the FZ35.
G1 ships with a much lesser lens, however there is an equivalent lens for sale as an accessory (more $$$).
G1 does not have the HD video capability (you'd have to upgrade to the GH1 - much, much more $$$).
G1 is only slightly bigger and slightly heavier - this is not really a negative for me because it's still way smaller than the DSLRs.

Based on the above, one would think I'm leaning towards the FZ35 but I'm not. The ONE thing that really is holding me back is this: the Micro 4/3's system is finally here!!! Hallelujah! Someone finally got it right!

So, I love DSLR's performance as we all do, I'm sure. But why? What is it that makes DSLR's so incredible... it's the lenses - it's NOT the "SLR" aspect of the camera. I'm refering specifically to the prism/beam splitter that every camera manfacturer has conveniently used to replace the mirror of the traditional SLRs so that they can deliver a "through the lens" viewfinder.

(So I know, noise and detector performance is another wonderful aspect of DSLR's - but the G1's new Micro 4/3's format has no baring on this aspect of performance - in fact it should make the noise performance, albeit very slightly, better, after all there is one less piece of optic in the optical path.)

Frankly, I don't even like the through the lens eye-piece because I want to know what my 'digital' photo is going to look like before I snap the picture - I don't care what the analog equivalent looked like moments before I snap the picture.

Analog photography isn't the instantly gratifying art that digital photography is -it's a completely different and rewarding art all in itself. Now, don't get me wrong here, I love my SLRs and I'm not arguing if it's better or worse - I'm merely saying that they are two completely different arts!

With digital, if your aperture/speed/ISO/etc. are set wrong, you know immediately not three days from now so what is the point of a through-the-lens viewfinder if your medium isn't film?!!

... bla bla bla I know, I know: "the resolution of the viewfinder isn't as high as the resolution of the stored picture." That's fair - it's a preference thing I suppose, but I guarantee that nowadays, your viewfinder image is a way more accurate representation of your digital photo than your analog viewfinder. And I think most professional photographers would probably agree if they just think about it for a moment and ask themselves one question, "why is it that my neck always hurts after every wedding/gig/etc I shoot?"

Almost every professional I see does this:
1) they use the eyepiece to frame and set up their shot.
2) Then they shoot - CLICK.
3) Then they pull their head back away from the eyepiece (sometimes they don't even move the camera so they keep their framing, just in case) and look down at the LCD on the back of the camera to do a quick "sanity check" that the photo looks good.
4) Then back on that eyepiece for the next shot.

OUCH! I see it ALL THE TIME!!! It's stupid and unnecessary.

So I've been avoiding buying a DSLR for this reason. Even after having owned several Nikon SLRs. I felt that no camera manufacturer has ever fully embrace the technology of digital focal planes even though they build their cameras around them, until now! The DSLR was a cluge - let's face it - it was nothing more than a retrofit to an older technology. It's understandable as coming up with a new standard of lenses is risky business.

So kudo's to Panasonic for sticking their necks out there! I want to support their endeavors in leading this whole paradigm shift that the photography world NEEDS to embrace. Let's get moving folks, we're way behind here.... get over the DSLR - it's antiquated. Here is the future.

I've been waiting for it for sooo long, that it's hard for me to not support what Panasonic is doing and give them my patronage. I'm confidant that the others will follow.

So my vote is G1. Now, let's see if I can come up with the money.

CL

Comments on Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ35 superzoom reviewed: crème de la crème

Panasonic doesn't have a clue in making cameras because they don't know what DSLR photography is all about. Canon on the other hand, has a dedication to professional equipment (as evidenced by their EOS line of DSLR) and has been trusted by professionals worldwide. For example, Canon's array of L lenses (which stands for luxury) is the pinnacle of lenses for DSLR photography, and they have taken their expertise to their superzoom Powershot SX1 IS. The SX1 also records in nothing less than full HD videos, superior ergonomics, and low noise performance due to the use of CMOS sensor.

My uncle is a pro wedding and sports photographer and he loves his Canon.
