For me it still better than the kindle in price and look. Sony was already partnered and has been offering public works via Google before Barnes & Noble got into the game (and had an ebook store providing for it's readers long before there was Kindle). It has been cheaper, open to more formats, and more accessible with expandable media (two slots). It even can do drm library books, unlike most other readers. And I am betting that most people with the sony (or any really) reader just use a site like Gutenberg to get their copyright free books. Previous dedicated devices used backlit or reflective LCDs and they had issues of battery life and viewability. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libri%C3%A9" rel="nofollow">http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Libri%C3%A9</a><br><br>The PRS-500 was released in 2006 and the PRS-505 in 2007. I didn't even think about project Gutenberg. I have a Sony PRS-500 and downloading Google books meant I could look at them in my ebook library on my computer but it wouldn't upload to my reader (which was really annoying me).
