Between integrated services on television sets like these, and things like the Roku box and WD TV, you can see where everything is headed. Eventually, every television will just have a light Linux distro built in, with an interface overlay like Moblin, and that will be used to access things like web page, e-mail, social networking services, streaming media, etc. We're still about 3-5 years out from that, but this year was the beginning of that transition.

hexydes

Comments on VUDU ditches the box, integrates into LG's LH50 NetCast HDTVs

My guess is that peeps would rather a separate box, than making their ultra thin LED screens thicker(like old LCD) to contain all the built-in media options. I like the idea of switching from plastic discs and cable/satellite subscription to streaming/DLing video on demand over IP. Especially since I rent movies more than buying, so I don't care about much about DRM.

But that whole concept of buying a proprietary box that's tied to a single content provider never made any sense to me. If said provider goes bust, or just gets eclipsed in service/selection/whatever by someone else, you have to go buy a whole nother box. This is part of why, despite being something akin to an Apple fanboy, I haven't bought the AppleTV. Now if only Netflix & Vudu & Apple would bring their content over to the PS3, since it's the box I already have, I might put away the bittorrents.

yonatron

Comments on VUDU ditches the box, integrates into LG's LH50 NetCast HDTVs

"After Dark," eh? chicka chicka yeah, fake id fake id

mr.ericslau

Comments on VUDU ditches the box, integrates into LG's LH50 NetCast HDTVs

What I find most interesting is the claim that even HDX movies start immediately. Even if you have a 50mbps connection they will not start instantly. Remember the movie is delivered via the peer network and VUDU did not increase the upload speed from peers, or the download speed to allow instant HDX playback. HDX titles are about 10gb in size. The max download speed on a VUDU box is 4mbps which allows for instant playback of their HD titles but NOT HDX.

Casey

Comments on VUDU ditches the box, integrates into LG's LH50 NetCast HDTVs

Vudu is only for those who want porn basically because it broadcasts in 480 whereas you get 720 on the AppleTV which is also much much MUCH faster on the download end. You are pretty much the only person to ever claim that AppleTV streaming is faster than VUDU which like it or not uses a far more efficient peer streaming model. My guess is that you have one of the several routers known to cause slow streaming with VUDU, read their FAQ or email support.

Love or hate VUDU, one thing has always been true, it offers the best picture and sound quality available VOD, far superior to what is on AppleTV, even if Apple may have a larger library

Casey

Comments on VUDU ditches the box, integrates into LG's LH50 NetCast HDTVs

By the way, the information I have may be outdated and does not reflect any unreleased/announced software developments.

Casey
