ASUS kills USB 3.0-laden P6X58 motherboard for reasons unknown
Such a shame, no? As has become all too common in the uncertain world known as ASUS' R&D lab, it looks as if yet another promising product has been canned before it ever had a chance to truly live. After the aforementioned company's P6X58 Premium motherboard set the world ablaze just over a week ago, primarily due to the USB 3.0 sockets shown there on the left, the mainboard has reportedly been canceled for reasons unknown. According to a report over at The Inquirer, an ASUS spokesperson claimed that the mobo had been shelved "not for any particularly interesting reasons," leaving us to wonder when we'll ever see a motherboard equipped with that so-called SuperSpeed magic. Our true emotions are captured nicely in the video just past the break.

Hah, great.
I expect USB3 to be the standard this holiday, do not worry people will go USB3 or bust
No USB3 = No Buy
I guess I'm in the minority. Since there aren't any USB 3.0 devices, I'm not willing to pay for the markup of the more expensive ports since they would be luxury at this point. I'd rather wait until I buy some USB 3.0 device, and then buy an addon PCI card to support it. Plus the addon card could then have about 3-4 of these ports.
This is no skin off my back, though i wish that companies would team up to move to this standard sooner.
Core i7 motherboards are expensive , USB3 hard drives will be everywhere Q1 2010 same with Blu ray burners and HD devices plus it's Future proof
USB3 devices are coming but your motherboard is not once you buy it unless you upgrade your pc like every year or something
USB2 lasted like how long 10 years? and they are not expensive you gonna be 2$ more for your 300$ motherboard? lol
Personally, I'd rather see chipsets that support motherboards which feature 7 fully electrical PCI-e 2.0 x16 Slots instead of built in USB 3.0. USB 3.0 can always be added later via PCI-e upgrade.
@Barcode
WTF are you going to do with 7 x16 ports on a home computer?
Damn, I was planning on getting this. Oh well, only 2 usb 3 ports is too little, and now they canceled it? I'll get a new board that supports core i7, usb 3, sata 3 and pci-e x16 2.0. or maybe 3.0.
Save your pretend debt dollars and wait for USB3 and SATA 6GB on board your mobo.
They spent too much money developing countless Eee PC models.
Do you not realise how much money they made back on the Eee family? :|
Do you not realize what sarcasm is?
bad sarcasm
they are joining apple in boycotting innovative technology...so sad
It just amazes me how people can turn ANYTHING into an Apple or Windows flame war.
I reckons: September ipods will have usb3 hardware and cables, but be software locked until they can get to their next mac release, and then turn it on at the same time. Everybody will applaud how well it works. Then apple will $10 for the software "upgrade"
well the new mac's don't have express slots...so your stuck with USB 2.0...
oh wait, mac users just throw there macs out once a year anyway.
Really? I guess I'll be tossing out my MacBook in September then.. damn. I though I liked it too. Thanks for being so wise Grammar!
Seriously? An anti-Apple flamewar starting in a story about ASUS and USB 3.0...?
Oh my, I got this song stuck in my head *just before* I clicked the link to this article. Damn you engadget!
HAHA just bril that, made me smile.
Thanks Engadget.
Who cares... ASUS suck anyway. Creator of unstable premium boards, denier of consumer's rights.
I've got the rest on my miiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnd!
HAHAHAHA the song is so fitting
I can tell you why they canned it right now. There is nothing (or not enough) that would use it and it isn't profitable enough yet.
To the guy that said ASUS boards suck, Yeah okay whatever you say, I'd probably agree that the low end boards aren't that great but the high end ones are very good. They are pretty expensive though.
Maybe the read everyone's comments that it was stupid not to have all the usb ports be 3.0 and realized they had a edsel.
The northbridge has tons of USB2.0, to have USB3 they have to add a chip, like in this case the NEC USB3.0 chip, so no they could not have all USB3.0 until intel releases an USB3 chipset., which is all obvious to asus of course so your reasoning is wrong.
If I had to guess: I think it might have to do with them getting advanced notice of the next stuff out from intel and that board not being compatible so then it would be pointless to set up a whole factory just to make mobo's that will no longer be cutting edge week after hitting the shop, all the while taking away resources to produce the real next generation.
Tell ASUS to kick down the SLIC 2.1 plz
Maybe they decided it would be better to release a full USB 3.0 board instead of one with a couple 3.0 ports and the rest 2.0 ports.
You'd expect SOMEONE to make some money from a PCIE USB3 board, how many lanes would it need though? I didn't memorize all the numbers.
Maybe they'll bring it back when.. oh I don't know, someone makes a peripheral that actually uses USB 3.0?
That's irrelevant if people want USB3 ports, besides you have a new mobo at least a year, and a premium one probably 2 years or more, now it's fair to assume that in the coming year there will be USB3 devices don't you think?
Damn aliens, stealing all our USB 3.0 ports.
Everyone needs this.. USB 2.0 is terrible for external storage of significant size.
Ooo... blue.
What I want to know is why a top of the line motherboard like this still needs PS/2 Keyboard and Mouse ports given the proliferation of USB keyboards and mice out there.
Actually there is a good reason that high end board have PS/2 ports even now, when it comes to keyboards several usb keyboards limit the number of keys you can press at once and have the signal go through to as few as 3 and how the processor handles usb signals versus PS/2 signals the performance can be enough of problem for more of the serious gamers that they are thankful for PS/2 ports
What I don't get is why companies still produce motherboards with only 4 usb ports. Mouse and keyboard, and then you only have 2 left for all your other peripherals.
What company does that? There might be ones with only four connectors on the back, but those always have onboard headers and slotbrackets with extra connectors.
Right... because you can't just use USB cables going from the pins on the mobo to a PCI slot...
about that...
You know what casemakers should do? put some of those pci-type cutouts on the front or side even, so many motherboards come with the brackets and they block you using the PCIE slots when there's several and in front/side might be handy too.
it will have been canceled because 1 of these 3 options:
1. USB3 controller isn't working properly
2. Sata3 Marvell Controller isn't stable or performing at full speed and they dont want to launch the board without sata3.
3. They decided to make all the ports usb3 and not just 2 of them.
There's no point buying a board with only 2 sata3 ports, the usb headers are probably only usb2 too which means the usb ports on the front of your case would only be usb2 speed too. Obviously cases dont have usb3 ports yet but once they do you would be missing out.
Everyone should hold off upgrading until usb3 and sata3 are stable and shipping, also till all the usb ports and sata ports are usb3 and sata3 and none of them are usb2 or sata2.
Could it be that there are no Windows drivers yet, but there are are for Linux
Could Microsoft have asked politely to postpone these for a bit.
I'll take my cynical hat off now. :)
bummer
I'll bet they're putting their R&D dollars into developing a board that'll support USB 4.
Maybe they dropped the USB 3 one for a model with Firewire 1600/3200 :P
Although why bother since you can't even get (consumer) devices for either ports. -.-
