Digital Cowboy's DC-MCNP1 2.5-inch NAS doubles as media player
It's a little hard to believe that we've gone two whole months without a new device from Digital Cowboy, but at long last, the Japanese wrangler is hitting back with a striking new piece of consumer electronics goodness. The DC-MCNP1, which falls neatly into the Movie Cowboy family, is a 2.5-inch NAS drive at heart, but aside from giving you access to files on its diminutive internal drive anywhere in the world, it also streams a plethora of file formats to your HDTV. The HDMI / composite video outputs should take care of the vast majority of ya, and the USB 2.0 socket provides an expansion option for those needing to hook up an external HDD. An Ethernet port is built in for network access, but those who'd prefer to cut the cord can certainly plug a wireless adapter into that USB socket and pray continuously to the signal gods above. If you find yourself in Fukuoka next month, give this one a look if you've got ¥19,900 ($209) to spare.

WTF this is just a copy of the xtreamer media players case..

Cool.
Add $130 and it will play back Blu-Ray and pump it to your HDTV through HDMI (with external blu-ray disk reader) ;)
Looks like a same device compared to http://www.xtreamer.net/
99€
Digital Cowboy rebrands Mvix products (which the Xtreamer is) in Japan.
Is it me or does it look really similar to the xtreamer?
I've bought that Xtreamer, can't wait. this is the Xtreamer only under a different name.
I always read Fukuoka, as being pronounced 'fuck you, okay' is that the way say it, or is that just me?
lol - if you're serious I believe it is pronounced "foo-koo-OH-kah"
Sorry for not knowing, but how do you "command" the NAS box to output via its HDMI or composite cable output? Do you need a PC to iniate this request on the network, or is there a screen that pops up on your TV when you load up the HDMI cable to it? Thanks in advance guys. Be detailed please.
Optical out? fuck year
Where can I buy it?
http://www.xtreamer.net Same thing only cheaper :) and better support i think :)
I wish I knew how to quit you
Nothing will replace my PCH until it has newsgroup support. Release a sweet media player with SABNZBD installed, and I'll sell my soul for it.
Thank me all for the plethora of decent media players suddenly hitting the market. I am sure I caused this by purchasing a WD TV earlier this month. It's typical - there's absolutely nothing out there, then I buy a WD TV and suddenly tons of HD media players are flooding the market.
I really wouldn't mind a NAS with my media player.
The PCH A-110 was available long before the WD device.
How does this new one compare to the PCH? Anyone care to comment?
Do either of them have gigabit ethernet? I would love a gigabit NAS any recommendations? My poor lil Linksys NAS200, I have a love/hate relationship with it.
**** Gigabit ethernet is WORTHLESS on a consumer NAS device ****
I've done a lot of research, and what it comes down to is that EVERY single consumer NAS device (and most "SOHO" devices) AKA those under $300 (without hard drives) use VERY slow chipsets. Seriously, you will almost never see throughput above 10-12MB/sec, with most units averaging around 4-6MB/sec. They can't even saturate a 100mbps ethernet link, so Gigabit is completely pointless on these devices and is only used for marketing purposes. Before you buy any device of the kind, go read a review from a trusted site. Only the lower-end QNAP units use a decent processor, and you will pay a premium.
As I've mentioned before, a FAR better option is to buy one of those small-form factor Intel Atom boxes (around $125) with a 3.5" SATA slot and stick a 1.5GB or 2GB drive in it. All you have to do is format the drive and install your choice of FreeNAS, Ubuntu, FreeBSD, or even Windows XP and then just mount it as a network drive on your other computers.
