There is a whiff of nVidia here with Nikon renaming what is essentially the same camera four times: D40, D40x, D60 and D3000. I guess marketing wouldn't allow it's proper name: the D40x Mk. It's a very cynical game being played here, make no mistake: features that could be added at little or no extra cost have been deliberately cut out to force as many people as possible to buy the more expensive products.

The D40 worked because, while stripped down, it was actually on par in image quality with the bigger, older bodies at the time of its release. This time it's different, the D3000 is not getting the technology trickle down from the D300-D90-D5000, Nikon choosing instead to let it tread water to a) lower costs and b) protect its product line.
