The iPod wins because it came out first and has the end-to-end ecosystem of accessories and songs in iTunes.

The Zune was just a turd MS put on the market to try and cash in on Apple's 5 year old ideas.

Now they're going after the iPod touch which came out 2 years ago. Same old boring MS. It'll be a complete dud, because of course, what Developer is gonna write apps for a Zune. There ya go.

The digital music war is over. Apple won. Now its the mobile platform: OS X iPhone, Apple has over 60,000 apps and everyday the gap gets bigger and bigger.

Sensing a market for those people, other companies such as Samsung, Sony, Microsoft, Sandisk, etc make music players to try to capture that marketshare and reduce that of apple's. There is no end to the 'war' and be thankful for that. The 'war' is what keeps killer products being made because of competition. I dont buy apple products but im glad they are relevant for that reason.

Plus, I actually think its a nice casing. You can't judge its external qualities by one digitally made image. Knowing Samsung, it will come out very sleek and good looking. I'm not sure how people are judging the product already since its not even out yet...

The reason the iPod and Zune are more successful is because they actually put some thought into their products. They try to retain the same OS for each player iteration they release. The build decent software for syncing them to your computer and build decent online stores where you can buy content for them. As a result an eco system builds around those products.

It's the same thing in the phone market. Sammy and LG and all these other companies like them just build this hardware and throw it out there. Six months to a year later they abandon them for something new with a totally different interface and third rate computer software.

Sure, companies like Samsung, iriver, and Cowon are not doing as well as Apple in the PMP market (I don't think Zunes are doing that well..?), but they are doing pretty good considering they are playing in non-local markets. And they do very well in Korea, much better than iPods.

And speaking of support, if you've owned Samsung's YP-P2, you'd know that they put out a new firmware every 3 months, often adding new software (like a full-on dictionary and flash games) and improving UI speeds.

Zune is a fail, and iPods are popular because their ecosystem is very popular in the Western market. But more then that I actually hear people talking about Zunes in real life. Never heard someone bring up "I use a Samsung A300YH2RTuI9 PMP or whatever the heck they call these disposable electronics they keep bringing out. Why are you so bitter? I'm just stating that (at least here in the US) these things are a dime a dozen and don't seem to have any TLC put into them.
Not saying they aren't good hardware. Just that they aren't nearly as popular because they don't put enough time and energy into the usability and longevity of these units.
