I love Windows Mobile, and it just makes my life easier because I develop windows, run windows everywhere, and everyone I know has at least one install of Windows (have run linux, don't need it, have lots of friends who use it etc, have lots of friends on Mac stuff too including girlfriend with iPhone etc) but I need a phone that's going to give me, or needs to be (and I'm open for choice):

- Multitasking - I'm looking at you Mr iPhone, no help there. So there's WebOS, WinMo, BlackberryOS, Android... anything else I'm overlooking? I don't like Symbian, the menus etc are never consistant and the Nokias I've had keep breaking and having to be returned - a bit unfortunate. I'd consider the new N97 but it's pretty fat.
- Remote desktop - VNC and RDP, so that's the iphone out?
- Great music player (or at least one that works) - Any device without a 3.5mm headphone jack should never be released to market (and music over bluetooth still sucks, even with the best kit I can still hear it crackling like a poor mp3, but let's not go into that here) and I just won't accept as a serious contender. That's a plethora of devices out.
- Really good camera - I don't want to carry a camera around with me. That means it's got to be fast and 5mp or better.

Do I want touchscreen or a full qwerty? I like being able to really hack out messages with a thumb keyboard. Then there's times where a touchscreen/qwerty candybar just sucks because I have to use a stylus because the screen is too small (WinMo). Then there's times where it's nice to be lazy and just press rather than having to get your thumbs exact/on keys.

I want to try touch screen on windows mobile, but it's laggyness is starting to put me off it. The Exchange integration is supported by most major browsers, and yeah I guess I'm cheap in that I'd like it supported without having to buy additional applications just for mail.

I'm considering a Blackberry Storm II and holding out for that because of it's enterprise level kit built right in. I'm disappointed the iPhone can't multitask, and if the storm 2 has a decent battery/screen/camera, I'd be swayed over to the bb side of things. Another deal breaker for iphone is iTunes and now the sucky activesync (sometimes, e.g. vista) is starting to annoy me too.

Oh and who came up with a cube as a button on the front of these new Samsungs? Dear me, was that the only basic 3d shape you could fine? Designfail. Really puts me off a lot and is the reason I wouldn't buy one. It isn't unique. It's not clever. Come up with something better (just IMHO).

So go for it, if you can suggest anything along the lines I'm looking, please reply!

3686

Comments on Samsung's retail Omnia II smartphone gets hands-on treatment

My HTC Touch HD seems to do all of that bar the keyboard.
-Multitasking, check
-Remote desktop, check
-Great music player, well I'm using a program called Nitrogen which is by far the best music player on a phone I have ever seen. Personal preference here but there are heaps of different programs you can get (the default Windows Media Player is crap). has 3.5mm jack, havent noticed poor playback
-Really good camera. I wouldnt say it's really good, it is only a mobile phone camera, and no flash to boot. But it is 5mp, and personally I'm quite happy with it (as good as my previous Nokia N95's)

Touchscreen laggyness? I find that the ROM's pushed out by XDA-devs keep making these devices better and faster. I don't notice any laggyness unless its still booting or loading a program.

So based on that, and the continuous updates and improvements XDA-devs keep pushing out, I would have to vouch for the Touch HD or any similar winmo device (Diamond 2, Touch Pro 2 if you want hardware keyboard etc).

masadav

Comments on Samsung's retail Omnia II smartphone gets hands-on treatment

The iPhone has both RDP and VNC apps...

Pammie

Comments on Samsung's retail Omnia II smartphone gets hands-on treatment

@masadav hey thanks for your input, the HD was one i really considered, but I'm a bit unsure about the HTC UI they've added onto the top of it. Is it good for multiple email and social accounts?

@Pammie but if you can't multitask, what if you needed to run two RDP sessions?
