The devices like Kindle in all it's various size's, is at least in the e-reader market pretty widely used. However; the e-reader market is still rather small. Then Amazon charges a premium price, I imagine trying to make it cool (read Boutique item) kind of like Apple does. The charge a premium price scheme in this specific market to me seems ridiculous.

If only Amazon had or would lower the price the could have a massively adopted device, and the market to themselves. They have so far chosen not to do this though. Now many, many other companies are coming into this market space. I predict when one of the big boys (on the manufacturing side, IE: SONY, SAMSUNG etc) which are now starting to come into this market, and at a lesser price point, but still with the same or even extended functionality, Amazon will die.

No not completely but in this market they will except for probably holding there Boutique device mystique. This could have, and mark me will be a very large device category after this happens. Read that as widely expanded usage scenarios. The biggest cost of the Kindle is the lifetime (of the product) of EVDO service from Sprint, used for wireless delivery of content. Amazon could offer a non-connected version for probably $175-200 less, but that would take away the biggest selling point of the device.

I can go to Amazon, find a Kindle Book, and click a single "Send to Device" button. Not unless the price drops some. And even if they did, I would still be picking up a Kindle. I cant stand to read on my laptop. My eyes get to tired to fast. My [short] experience with an E-Ink reader (one of Sony's) was very pleasant and my eyes were not tired at all.

Joshua Walters

Comments on

Not to mention that tablet PC devices don't last two weeks on a single battery charge (more like two hours) because the backlit LCD is constantly using power; The e-ink doesn't.

I have a Kindle, and I have a laptop PC. So for me, it would be great to be able to quickly sync documents with something like dropbox. Drop it a file in a folder on my desktop, it automatically appears on the Kindle.

Whispernet, for this purpose, is the problem. It's silly and inefficient to force data back through the Amazon servers and out to Sprint's whispernet servers (with their rather high bandwith rates) when they're sitting on my laptop 10 feet away. Wifi (with a switch to save power) could offer up so many ways to sync up personal documents with dropbox/ sugarsync/ evernote.

A new version of dropbox is even coming out that is network aware-- it pushes a sync directly over the network rather than up to the dropbox servers and back down.

Obviously, there's always a USB sync, but we're talking wishlist here...

nougat885

Comments on

But if you're already at your computer to put the file in the drop box why not just plug the Kindle in and transfer it?

The Golden Wombat

Comments on

Sounds like your describing the Sony Readers. The ability to send it .doc files as well as PDFs has saved me reams of paper.

What would I change?

The software needs a folder structure for organization. Finding one book or article among hundreds can be a pain, especially if you don't remember the exact title to search for.

An SD card would be nice. I use the one on my Kindle 1 and miss it on the DX.

Regular wifi would make transfering files easier than having to plug in a USB cable.

I realize that the SD card and the wifi would eat into battery life, but they would be convenient to have.

Highlighting and the ability to make short notes in PDFs would be useful. The DX isn't a full-fledged computer - and I don't expect it to be - so if I need to make extensive notes and highlights, I can pull the PDF into Skim and use my Wacom tablet for serious annotations. Since I've made handwritten notes for years using library books for research, I don't find it onerous to do it with the DX.

The slanted keyboard on the K1 is much easier for me to use while holding it, but I'm getting used to putting the DX on a flat surface to type in search words, etc., and I can type on it while holding it if I have to.

All in all, for those of us who read a lot, it is one sweet device as it is. A few improvements would make it indispensable.

Clio

Comments on

give it pages

Absolute92

Comments on

Aside from the useless keyboard (touch screen keyboard please) and PDF support, the problem isn't with the Kindle but the service.
1) since I get less than I do with a paperback, the "books" need to cost significantly less than a paperback.
