The phone is sleek, and when it comes to software, I have no grudge about it.
Know that lacking 3G affects directly to the OVI Maps functionality, since the assisted GPS also downloads a lot of info on the fly and helps the thing having a lock-on in less than 30 seconds, at least in Argentina's 3G network.

Also to consider: 8GB Out of the box... Notice how much effort you need to make anything scroll on that UI? Yes it's a PITA. It would have been acceptable or livable if I hadn't tried an iPhone or Palm Pre.

Also if you look closely you will see signs of him touching something and the phone not responding. When you scroll contacts it does it one at a time but a real fluid scroll. At the end he tries to scroll back and the phone does nothing. I have a 5800 so these sorts of interface issues are no surprise to me.

Then getting into Facebook involves the browser popping up, then it tells you that it is connecting to such and such network for 5 seconds. Why the HECK do I need to have that thing pop up and tell me that? This isn't 2003 anymore. Just connect and do it fast. I don't need a pop up to disguise the fact that your phone takes 10 seconds to connect to anything.

The amount of finger pressure you need to apply to scroll in the browser is not fun. The device is not enjoyable to use in the least, It makes you feel that you are working at getting anything done on it.

Anyway, I will admit that it seems snappy and that there are improvements over the 5800, BUT THE BASIC FUNDAMENTAL TOUCH INTERACTION needs a MAJOR overhaul. If they want to compete with Apple or Palm or Google or even Microsoft next year.

This is a budget phone and it shows.

sr

Comments on

I meant "but NOT a real fluid scroll"

To add to that the scroll is primitive as heck. You would be better off with the old Nokia way of just having arrow buttons on the ends and tapping those instead. This "scroll" they have now is 3 times the work for the same result. They want to emulate other platforms but they don't realize that their D-pad oriented UI is best left for D-pad use.

sr

Comments on

when he whipped our the stylus, everything inside me died

Art

Comments on

You must have a very shallow existence then.

Wolfticket

Comments on

Yeah. I'm sa to say I can't see them managing it the way they're going right now, I hoe their Android handsets come out kicking and punching because Symbian is looking more like a lame horse waiting to get put down with each and ever release. Hail to the iPhone, with all its wonderful features, and inexplicable lack of features.

But.

The iPhone 3GS 16GB costs around US$800-$900 in most parts of the world, unlocked (which is how much of the world operates, with unlocked phones). That's a lot to pay for a phone, no matter how wonderful it is.

The Nokia 5800 costs a bit over US$300 unlocked. Yes, it's not as cool, or as refined, or as stylish, or as (non-)functional as the iPhone. But that price tag is a *lot* easier to swallow. I'd still rather buy the Nokia 8800 Arte or Carbon Arte. At least that looks like it's in a class of its own. Plus, who needs all that other garbage on a cell phone for anyway. That's why we have computers/laptops, hell, even iPod touches/etc. All I want in a cell phone is for it to make phone calls, look great, solid build (not cheap and plasticy) & be something that not every other person out there has/carries. So, for me, the 8800 Arte's or if I really go all out, the Vertu's are the perfect phones! For me!

Chris
