And we all know this from the legendary Pentium bug. But, let's not blow this up more than needed. Nvidia has screwed up...so have PC makers who used nvidia chips. Now, one of them is offering to fix it. While the statistical details of the case are not known/mentioned, let's not behave as it every chip that nvidia's ever made is full of bugs - or as if every laptop that sony's ever made has graphics that melt away. Let's also remember that companies at the forefront of technology need to be commended for pushing the boundaries of imagination, constantly. nvidia (and also ATI) amongst others is noteworthy for this reason.

ah-palin

Comments on Sony finally admits NVIDIA chips are borking its laptops, offers free repair

I still can't believe that repairs are being offered...

It's time to REPLACE the cards!

Wiizer (MW2 Sweatshop Entrepreneur)

Comments on Sony finally admits NVIDIA chips are borking its laptops, offers free repair

do you remember when everyones laptop were exploding due to using sonys battery.
sony now knowshow it feels to be on the receiving end.

TheCow5

Comments on Sony finally admits NVIDIA chips are borking its laptops, offers free repair

now, what about Hardware Virtualization?

Pontro!

Comments on Sony finally admits NVIDIA chips are borking its laptops, offers free repair

Blame it on the n - Just doing a quick update. I spoke to Sony's tech team the evening of the 11th. They have a special telephone line to call about the particular issue, you can find the info here http://esupport.sony.com/perl/news-item.pl?template=EN&news_id=349 (For us US folks) with the number to call. I spoke to the technician and he got me on my way to dispatching a repair. The following afternoon I received a call from a tech. in Tier 2 Support and the man explained to me that my particular model (AR-620E) did not fall under the umbrella to be fixed (Yet it's exhibiting the symptoms noted, and has a NVIDIA 8400M GT chipset, last I check, that was the affected one?) However, the tech. spoke to his marketing manager (Paul Newman, does that name ring a bell for anyone?) and the manager OK'd my repair to still be fixed for free.

Today (Friday, Aug. 14th) I received my box from FedEx, packed up the compu with the work order paperwork, as well as copies of my receipt and also a copy of the hardware listed in my computer, highlighting the Graphics Card contained within. Box went out a few hours later, with a delivery date of Monday. Will keep posted, I'm praying this goes painlessly and I really do not have to pay, or worse the send it back unfixed because when I turned it on before packing up, it decided to go back to normal...however, it's been in my closet since December '08. (which was when the green and pink lines started appearing.) We'll see. I'll fight this tooth and nail if I have to.

Harley Quinn

Comments on Sony finally admits NVIDIA chips are borking its laptops, offers free repair

I will try contacting Sony with my dead nVidia 8400M GS SZ780 laptop. They have not even provided a fault diagnosis and just say the motherboard is at fault. I have provided detailed information, including the generation of a bootable Linux CD from which which debug can be generated, showing the motherboard works just fine. As Sony engineers cannot recreate this information (as the only use Windows), they say that the mainboard is at fault. Eh? Just because the issue results in a blank screen, they think the machine won't boot, their so-called engineers are either stupid or just not interested in fixing the inherent problem the machine was shipped with. Sony customers deserver better than this, their only offer was to replace the mainboard at a cost of £750. Why do I want that as the mainboard works just fine, it has the nVidia GPU fault, nothing else.

MAD

Tom
