More data has to be read and processed, so I wouldn't be surprised if higher bitrates mean higher power consumption. Also, low bitrate only means more data has been left away. It hasn't been compressed better.  Furthermore, this thing also plays FLAC etc., which may use more CPU power to process. At least Ogg Vorbis reduces battery life quite a bit, I am a bit surprised that it isn't mentioned.
