They couldn't sell anything because they could adjust inventory, they couldn't add up the total with tax because their cash registers were tied into the computers - they could not physically make a ticket, add up everything and take my cash money. Our conception of AI is so terribly backward that we're probably hundreds of years from letting loose a non-biological intellect that matches our own, much less exceeds it.<br><br>More good news, so far, no text readers have advanced the cause of malicious genocidal AI yet (blog commenting and web browsers, on the other hand...).  I'm going to go out on a limb and guess this one won't either.<br><br>For the record, I've walked into a restaurant and they weren't able to serve me because the electricity was down and they couldn't actually cook anything. I didnt do calculus with an abbicus and only dirt and stick to write with though, so im not as awesomely hardcore as you. What MMMM Donuts says is very true. My course is sui generis anyway and put together from many sources to keep the material interesting and up to date. The primary documents created from this material are PowerPoint presentations (snicker all you want, I don't care) which the students print out and annotate lavishly during my well-attended lectures. Textbooks are sometimes wrong and always out of date. Even these e-versions are just slavish copies of immense textbooks that are themselves 3-4 years out of date. I've said this many times.  Font and page size is determined relative to how thick a book will end up being.  Since digital books don't have a thickness, it doesn't matter how much display area there is.<br><br>I have read a few thousand books on my Tapwave Zodiac which has a COLOR backlit 3.8" 480x320 screen. My online college offers many of their course text books in either electronic or printed format. I don't know about you, but I appreciate having some screen size. I can't imagine a student who doesn't have a laptop. I also work with text books and documents using a 27 inch screen at home. It's amazing what you can do with the right tools. Having these services on an iPhone is ok. I've blocked out that entire semester... except the parties just before exams.<br><br>If I had to do it again, I wouldn't mind such an app.  As long as the font size can increase and the device had a replaceable battery.
