Are you smoking crack? Sony was considerd the best back in the days of the Walkman. They have lost that reputation. Sony is having major financial trouble, and no, it's not just because of the economy.

And I think you mis-understood me. I'm not putting down the slim or anything like that. What I'm saying is if you constantly re-release your hardware in a cheaper slim version because you need to to get sales, isn't that saying your orignal designs and pricing sucked?

Microsoft and Nintendo will not fear Sony. Sony will initially get a boost in sales from everyone waiting for a slim, and then things will die down. Things will go on just as they have been. Nintendo will be sitting in their solid gold-walled offices laughing while sitting on their piles of cash. Microsoft will continue to do well because, honestly, the majority of the hardcore gaming community backs the 360. RROD or not, the 360 has the majority of the games that the majority of people care about. You may like the PS3 better, and that's fine, but the majority don't. Pricing maybe. Designs? No.

The original PS3 is kind of a wonder. I don't know if you've ever seen one dissected, but it has probably the most amazing cooling system you'll ever see this side of liquid cooling. There's a reason why the PS3's failure rate is so much lower than the Xbox 360's, and that's it. Most of the PS3's girth comes from that cooling system - it's just got a massive ducted heat sink and a huge fan. Not that the 360 is really any smaller than the PS3 (it isn't), but MS would have been wise to add a bit a girth to it in the name of reliability.

Obviously over time technology gets easier to produce in smaller sizes that use less power, and all that cooling becomes less necessary. Hence the smaller PS3. That doesn't mean the original designs "sucked", it means the original designs were perfectly suited to the technology at the time. If you start from a point where your designs *can't* handle the technology at the time - ie. the 360 - and only can later as the technology improves, *that* is a poor initial design.

Anyway, slimming down consoles over time is nothing new. It started with the Atari 2600 almost 30 years ago, and many systems since then have had slimmed-down versions later in life, including the Genesis (twice) and SNES, the PS1, PS2, Atari Lynx, Game Boy, and others. Right - either that or the technologies that are available today weren't available or cost effective with the initial design... I mean, why redesign the original microwave? Why make 45nm chips when 65nm exist?

It's not that they *need* to get sales, it's simply that redesigning lowers the cost to manufacture, which means that they can make the same % profit at a lower price point. It's saying that the technology that they used has become more evolved.

If it's cheaper to manufacture, it will be almost just as cheap to manufacture in the same case. You don't need to include the elaborate cooling system if it's not needed, it's all still in the same case. This is what Microosft has done with the 360, obviously it's cheaper to produce now, but it's still the same design.

What I'm getting at is why do they need a new design? It's like saying, "hey we know the first design sucked, and even though there was nothing we could do about it, here's a better one now". Just keep it in the same case, you can manufacture it for less, but why the new design? Obviously the only reason is to spur sales.
