I LOVE the hardware.. I'm just sick of this company that doesn't follow through with promises of support and add-ons. Take the GPS option for example.. came out for the 605 series.. still no optional maps can be purchases, still no map updates. Then they "updated" the firmware on the Archos 5 to allow using the GPS option with it.. or did they? It was still buggy.. (main problem was crashing when trying to use POI options) dozens of calls to tech support later and being told an update would come someday.. I finally got pointed to an FTP site to download new installer software for the A5.. did it work? No.. the file structure was wrong.. I fixed the file structure and got it working now... I've written letters and gotten no replies and made dozens of calls and the best they could do was (this is for real) advised me to sell the A5 and the GPS and buy the Archos 9.. Say what? To that I say piss off and while I will continue to enjoy my Archos 5 on trips for what it does do well.. (play movies), I will not be dupt into investing any more money in Archos. They have great hardware and shit for software support, customer support, web site support, etc, etc. It's been a steady stream of, let's get new hardware out and drop support for stuff people already bought.

engadget

Comments on Android-based Archos 5-inch Internet Tablet coming September 15 with (you guessed it) an AppsLib store

totally agree. great hardware, but software really poor, and customer support inexistent. on the other side, this is Android, so we hope there will be apps to handle all needs.

raphael.cohen

Comments on Android-based Archos 5-inch Internet Tablet coming September 15 with (you guessed it) an AppsLib store

Archos is the best company in the world.

They make the best electronic devices in the world.

This device will change the internet as we know it. Archos makes good leading-edge hardware. But their product all comes out 90% ready, and it can be extremely frustrating to deal with this, as they don't have the resources to really provide good tech support.

The really significant item in this information release is that Archos is apparently going to allow third party software for the first time. That's a huge change for this company, as the other major criticism against them in the past has been that their device is totally locked down. We'll see if this new system works better. I predict growing pains, but it can't be worse than the current situation where only Archos provides software, so there is nothing really to choose from.

gylman

Comments on Android-based Archos 5-inch Internet Tablet coming September 15 with (you guessed it) an AppsLib store

well if I'm right, you'de look really dumb, right ?
http://www.archos.com/products/imt/archos_5/specs.html?country=fr&lang=fr
http://reviews.cnet.com/portable-video-players-pvps/archos-5-60gb/4505-6499_7-33226902.html
http://www.archos.com/products/nb/archos_9/index.html?country=fr&lang=fr

please check things before hating people.

raphael.cohen

Comments on Android-based Archos 5-inch Internet Tablet coming September 15 with (you guessed it) an AppsLib store

what? its running windows-all it should come with is a piece of software that allows other software to be used with expanded buttons

Art

Comments on Android-based Archos 5-inch Internet Tablet coming September 15 with (you guessed it) an AppsLib store

Been thinking about an Internet-browsing device to carry around the house. I use the Archos 5 daily to record my favorite TV shows, and then watch the shows while traveling the next day. The screen is great, the built-in stand a welcomed feature, and (with the optional plug-in) you can play just about any SD video codec directly without the timely conversion required by many of the other brands. Before the Archos 5, I used the 605WiFi which was also a great device. The 605 still works fine. I am a gadget geek, hence the update to the Archos 5. Assuming the new Android device is available in the US, I am sure that will be added to my collection as well.

I would like to see Archos pay more attention to software updates, and not promise things they ultimately do not deliver. However, there is no other device for my video needs that comes close to the Archos devices. Also have an Archos 7 with the bigger screen. For my video needs, the iPod touch is a toy compared to the Archos 5. I am talking about video recording, and playback, not the app store. Yes, I do own the iPod touch to gain experience with mobile Safari, Mobile OS X, and multi-touch (all overrated IMO), but rarely use it for video. The Archos is so much better for watching video (bigger screen, higher resolution), and of course, the iPod touch cannot record video directly from an external video source.

engadget

Comments on Android-based Archos 5-inch Internet Tablet coming September 15 with (you guessed it) an AppsLib store

Sounds interesting.
