The reason was simple - I wanted Internet access (an unlimited data plan) through AT&T. They charge you $30 extra a month if you have a smartphone - even if you have an unlimited messaging family plan. That price drops to $10 a month with the Eternity featurephone. I tried to reason with AT&T on their "logic" but it was pointless.

My new featurephone has a larger screen, better graphics, a better camera and for daily Internet usage, that larger screen is going to be more useful than the smartphone's screen. All the AT&T rep could tell me is smartphones download more data than featurephones. They're the crappy samsung flip phone. Personally I just got a new phone from Telus in Canada. And it's a feature phone. Personally I would've loved to have gotten the touch pro2 or even the touch pro or blackberry tour but on top of the phone price I would've had to add on a crazy expensive data plan. It just didn't make sense.

Penguin Warlord

Comments on NPD finds featurephones account for 72% of new handset sales in the US

Penguin Warlord:
What do you think a feature phone is? A lot of people have trouble swallowing an extra $30/mo for a mobile data plan, especially when they already pay more than that for high-speed internet at home. I would like to have a smartphone, but since I work out of my house I really don't need web/email access on the go often enough to justify the cost, given that most places I do travel for business (hotels, airports, etc.) have free wifi for my laptop.

cc82

Comments on NPD finds featurephones account for 72% of new handset sales in the US

yuck, the enV2. If by "feature phone" you mean the "feature" where the buttons stop working on the front, the latch falls apart, and keys in the inside repeat themselves or don't register, and the call quality is crap... well, yeah, I guess it deserves mention.

BUt... I'm happy with my $42/month w/ unlimited text from Verizon and this POS enV2. Whenever the next big phone comes out, whether it's an iPhone, Palm Pre, BB Tour, or one of the HTC sex-o-phones, I heavily consider switching providers, plans, and phones... but I end up coming back to the fact that in almost every circumstance, I'd have to pay double per month, drop almost $200 out of pocket, and it'd end up just tethering me more to my work desk.

Brazell

Comments on NPD finds featurephones account for 72% of new handset sales in the US

Hey that makes me feel not so bad about being obsessed with the Instinct S50. I'm kinda surprised that the Rant is one of the two top selling phones of the period being that Sprint is losing customers at such an alarming rate.
