The new PlayStation 3, or should we say – PS 3 Slim, is now only $299. That is awesome!

I bought the original PlayStation 3 with 60 GB of memory for $600 (in January 2007), and I love it. The PS 3 Slim looks really nice. But beyond looks, this is the system Sony has been planning and hoping to introduce ever since the PlayStation 3 first came out in November 2006. What is incredible is that Sony (a $90 Billion company – based upon 2008 revenue) has finally delivered the ultimate gaming experience. The fact that they have sold 24 million PlayStation 3 (PS3) consoles in less than 3 years is astonishing, considering the initial high price ($600) of the PS 3 console. Yes, they lowered the price first from $600 to $500, and then to $400. But this price was still too high. Imagining the PS 3 selling for $400, competing against the Wii – which was (and is still) selling for $250, and the XBOX 360 (without a hard drive) selling for $199. In fact, the PS 3 overtook the XBOX 360 in sales, forcing Microsoft to sell the diskless version of the XBOX 360 in order to increase sales.

The new price of $299 spells a new era for the PlayStation 3. The PlayStation 3 now has a 120 GB hard drive, the Cell Processor, NVIDIA Graphics, Wireless Controllers, and a Blu-ray drive (which can hold 50 GB of game data on a single disk and also play Blu-ray movies at full high definition TV resolution of 1080p at 60 fps - frames per seconds), all for only $299. The PS 3 now cost only $50 more than the Nintendo Wii. The Wii has low resolution graphics, no hard drive, and sells for $250. Sony now has the most competitive gaming device on the planet – based upon features, game library, and price.

Conclusion:

A new era for the PlayStation 3 has begun at this new $299 price point. The PlayStation 2 sales surpassed 140 million in 9 years. The PlayStation 3 has sold 24 million in less than 3 years (at a high price point), but the real (PS 3) sales will now begin as the millions of PlayStation 2 gamers will now find that the PlayStation 3 is now more affordable – and they can play games in high definition (1080p) and can also play and enjoy watching Blu-ray movies as well on their television. Well done Sony!

Thinker

Comments on

I agree, i never got a ps3 but i did own a ps2, the downside of the ps3 is that you could have gotten the discontinued 800$ ps2 compatible version or waited to get the cheaper piece of crap with no card reader or ps2 less usb or get this slimmer
whats the point of making it slim? everyone should have lots of room to put something thats like an inch thicker without the potential to overheat and blow up north america, sony shouldnt have taken the time trying to fit a lot of power into a smaller package. im more pumped for something like what ms is doing, a basic price drop and got the new xbox in the works for 2010

Dillon

Comments on

@ Thinker

dude what the hell did sony put in your ass to make you spout off that worthless marketing propaganda like that?
everyone knows that sony has performed the worst this console generation, and this is their attempt at getting back in the game.
the ps3 slim is mildly interesting, but what i'm most intrigued by is the price drop.
i've had a 360 for almost 2 years now and i've always wondered what the grass is like on the other side....maybe i'll take a look now.
"era of the 300 dollar ps3"-- here i come.

dumbass.

kamakaze

Comments on

Am I the only one that thinks this console is butt- ugly?

jimminy

Comments on

@ Jimminy
No you are not the only one who thinks the slim is butt ugly.
