The AH-4 is great quality, comfortable and easy to lock and release.

Unlike a neck strap, when it's attached to your hand it's not tethered 3 feet away from your neck or bouncing around on your chest. You can move your hand in any direction and the camera goes with it and stays with it. You don't even have to hold it when you are relaxed, you can open your fingers and the grip holds it secure around your hand.

You can see why they did it though. There's nothing to stop the camera from sliding out of your hand with just the front construction.
