It's clear that the closed system on the iPhone takes the control away from me, but it works and that's what count! If I miss the train I want another connection instantly!

The app for our railway network is available for Pocket PC, Symbian, via Browser and for the iPhone. Even though the PPC and Symbian Version work offline they need longer than the iPhone version which works instantly!

I know it could be better on the other plattforms but it isn't and there are other apps which follow the same rule and that's where productivity is more important than freedom. That being said, this is a perfect example of why having competition is good. I'd bet a large amount of money that the biggest factor in Apple's trying to be more open lately is the quality competition it's getting on all fronts- whether it's the Pre (for the interest of full disclosure, my preferred device, but that's really irrelevant) coming at it from one side, or Android devices like the HTC Hero, and so on and so forth.

I grew up with Commodore computers (from 1976 PET) and my father started one of the first computer clubs in Ohio and there is only a handful of apps/games for the C64 which were/owned by Commodore. Unfortuantely, C64's emu's are for pirating C64 games as none of the original license allow for duplication of the software. I doubt that the companies who still own the rights to those apps/games will appreciate Apple enabling people to illegally use their software.
