Translation barely used at all (pointing is still used). For example, with both the frisbee and the swordfighting, the hands (hilt of the sword) don't move at all, it just pivots around one spot.

But the biggest annoyance has to be the drift. What happens when that single point doesn't rest on the person you want to track?

You can't just do reflection time across the whole pixel array because you can't scan the pixel array quickly enough to measure distances of a few mm or even cm accurately enough. You would have to scan the entire pixel array a billion times a second just to get 30cm (1 foot) accuracy of distance. Last I checked, even 100,000fps was considered a lot and rather expensive.

No, more likely it works like radar or lidar, where it emits pulses and receives pulses which represent reflections across the entire range the sensor "sees", and the time between the peaks outging and incoming are measured, giving a single distance measurement which tells how far away the most bulky part of the viewed object is.

I'm sure Natal could tell you moving your whole body forward and back (perhaps doing the hokey pokey), but then to have it tell when you move just your hand forward and back using reflection time seems rather unlikely.

why not the LS2LS7?

Comments on

I thought about it more overnight, and I'm actually less skeptical now. They couldn't measure the distance of every point at once, so I assumed they'd just use an overall reading like radar.

But maybe not. Maybe the point of doing the 48-point joint map is than they can measure the distance at those 48 points, which seems like it could be done 30 times a second.

So, I think maybe each point could be located in 3-space 30 times a second.

Although I don't expect the results to be prefect, they're going to have to deal with a certain amount of wrong data. TW'10 with the motion plus was enjoyable. If you're willing to pay for the game and enjoy it, I don't think $20 extra is necessarily ridiculous. I will echo your sentiment that it would be great if we had the improved accuracy from the get-go, however, as some games (like TW, in my experience) clearly need it.
