Unfortunately, he isn't good at explaining things. "You are pressing on the screen, while on the iPhone you press a glass" (or something to that end). What does that mean?

Piezoelectric screens are neither capacitive nor resistive. They operate by the piezoelectric phenomenon of quartz crystals. It's the conversion of mechanical energy into electric (it works the other way around as well, as oscillating crystals, used for creating a clock signal. It behaves like an RLC circuit). To use his sponge analogy, this makes the screen bend where you press it, thus giving you a tactile feedback.

Mind you, I haven't used on.

ioannisnousias

Comments on Video: Storm 2's new touchscreen tech explained with mindblowing clarity, WiFi confirmed

seriously...post-its? haha, that was interesting

but actually, i think he made absolutely no mention of resistive screens. just compared the iphone to the storm, to the storm 2. think about what he said though about comparing the iphone to the storm 2, its not really that difficult to understand if you use your imagination. like think about doing exactly what he said, typing something on a large piece of glass...say a 'virtual keyboard' that has absolutely no give to it. then compare that to the storm 2 where it allows your finger to actually depress into the screen itself, basically what he was talking about w/ the sponge (making that click 'double click') i'd love to try it out myself. in no way is it going to be even close to have a physical qwerty keyboard, but using my imagination i'd like to think of it as haptic feedback 2.0. where its not just give you a lil buzz to let you know that you hit that corresponding character, but its physically alerting you to your key presses. something i think is awfully cool.

SimbaDogg

Comments on Video: Storm 2's new touchscreen tech explained with mindblowing clarity, WiFi confirmed

Breasts > Sponge in tactile feedback. This illusion is created with use of small piezo devices under each key that vibrate when the key is depressed and released, to give the feeling that they are moving. Or let me say like a placebo...people just feel like they are pressing a button but essentially it's a touchscreen and they can still make the same mistake as they would in any touchscreen. Just because you get the feeling of pressing a button doesn't actually make it separate allocated buttons is how i see it. I've used the Storm 1 and didn't like it, RIM needed a lot of improvement with the touchscreen and software in my opinion, especially if they wanted to compete with Apple (iPhone), Google (Android), and Palm (Pre), who in my opinion have gotten the multi-touch down as good as it can get for now. I still feel like RIM's best phone is the Curve.

There still is nothing that compares to a physical keyboard...hence i'm sticking with my Blackberry Curve and Palm Pre.

But hey maybe i'm wrong...we'll see once the Storm 2 hits the market. :)

Dmitry Malayev

Comments on Video: Storm 2's new touchscreen tech explained with mindblowing clarity, WiFi confirmed

I agree. This means that the storm 2 should (and I say should) feel like a real keyboard. A lot of companies try to use haptic feedback to recreate the experience of typing on a keyboard but it is largely unsatisfactory. Physical feedback means that you actually have the sensation of physically pressing a button it is WAY better than a simple rumble and much better than nothing at all.

IMHO the guy did a fine job of explaining the touch tech.
