Nvidia's Tegra is by no means unique in this regard.

For example, the popular TI OMAP3 3430 has:
- 1x ARM Cortex-A8 Core (which itself has the high-performance floating point "NEON" SIMD engine)
- IVA2+ dedicated multimedia encoding/decoding chip
- PowerVR SGX35 3D graphics processing unit
- ISP dedicated Image signal processor
(http://focus.ti.com/general/docs/wtbu/wtbuproductcontent.tsp?templateId=6123&navigationId=12796&contentId=36505)

Again, the Tegra is a good chip with a great GPU. But even though it has 2 ARM processing cores, they are still low-clocked 650mhz ARM11 (ARMv6 instruction set) cores. The newer Cortex-A8 architecture is over TWICE as fast as ARM11 at the same clockspeed. So two 650mhz ARM11 cores is about equal to one 650mhz Cortex A8 (ARMv7 instruction set)

For comparison, Qualcomm has a 45nm Snapdragon chip. It uses a custom Cortex-compatible core that is essentially a turbo-charged Cortex-A8, and it runs at 1.3Ghz. And the on-board GPU is no slouch. That would blow away the Tegra in raw processing power, although the Tegra's GPU is probably better.

The next generation multi-core Cortex-A9 architecture is even better. I believe the Apple Tablet will be using a 45nm dual-core Cortex-A9 design coming from PA SEMI.

loosely_coupled

Comments on Tegra to hit 'media pads' soon says company man Mike Rayfield

Sack the camera operator.

barrykingstar

Comments on Tegra to hit 'media pads' soon says company man Mike Rayfield

Wow, I work with that guy and he won't be happy.

stefan.christopher
