If you damage a page of a book, while it is annoying on that page it does normally only impact that page, or that particular book at most. However, if you damage the screen of your eBook Reader then the damage will appear on every page of every book that you read on it. Fingerprints aren't really that much of a problem since you can clean them off easily enough but things like scratches are much more difficult to remove.

We probably all think that we can keep our devices in pristine condition but accidents do happen and you can also never really account for the idiocy of other. Also how long will an Ebook last? For 300 usd I can imagine you replace it after 4 years or so when a better/faster/whatever edition gets released. Hence that these Ebooks are still in their starting period and probably have still a long way of development to go.
I´m waiting myself for a more affordable A3/A4 sized book for copying my technical books to it. I can´t imagine reading excel sheets with some graphs in it on the small screens these days. Also as long as companies excpect me to use an Ebook where the producer tells me how to use it and what I can read they can keep it. Give me an Ebook with a proper screen size with WiFi and speed together with dual touch so i can zoom where i feel like and you get what i want. An eBook Reader is a device that seems to fit somewhere between the two - you can't put it in your pocket like a mobile telephone but it is much easier to "throw around" than a notebook computer due to its small size and low weight. I therefore tend to think that it will likely see more physical abuse than a mobile telephone but not as much as a notebook, which means that I am still very concerned about how well its display will repel damage.

In many respects I suppose whether this is a problem will depend on how well you think you can look after it. The realist in me says that you won't take as much care of this as you will something like a notebook computer but if you can ensure that no damage occurs to your mobile telephone then you'll probably be OK. I prefer reading books on my 1st gen Kindle for many reasons, not the least of which is that it is far easier on my eyes. That's because I can change the type size, typeface, and justification, which is just not possible with a regular book. No backlight means it does not tire your eyes out any more than reading a regular printed page, either. Also, no more having to balance the heavy side of the book when you are lying down to read. There are now just too many advantages to ignore the usefulness of these devices. I think price is the only barrier to entry, which is out-weighed by the convenience. I have a 505 and love it and have moved back to it after using a Kindle 1 and Kindle 2. The Kindle 2 suffers from this same problem compared to the 1, the contrast is much weaker on the 2 and created too much eye strain for me. I've sold both Kindles and have moved back to using my Sony 505. The Kindle wireless is nice if you love DRM. I was hoping that the new Sony's were going to be much better and other than the faster page turning, it looks like they've taken a step backwards with this new model.
Touch seems like the new fad right now, but as has been said in this thread already, just puts smudges on your screen and what's the point if the contrast is bad. Unless someone figures a way to put the touch panel below the display or make much higher contrast displays, it is going to be a choice of weather you want to read or doodle. This is mostly unheard of on the mac. I know it's a minor annoyance, but still bugs me. It also got me wondering what they added that would require a restart.

Which leads me to my second point of contention. A careful look at the installers custom options shows that the installer ads a third party kernel extension to your machine. These things are usually used for device drivers and things of that nature, why that would be required for syncing books over USB is beyond me. What sucks about third party kernel extensions is they can lead to instabilities in your system. A kernel extensions (or kext) has direct access to kernel level functions and memory and If they aren't written carefully kernel panics can result, which will crash your mac. Whereas, a normal user level application will at most crash itself and die, leaving the OS unscathed. Even if we give the sony programmers the benefit of the doubt and assume their kext is written beautifully and is perfectly stable, it's still feels like overkill when the Kindle, and any number of other USB devices do fine with what the default OS provides.

The Mac version of the Library software's UI is also very ugly and doesn't jive well with the rest of OS X, it looks like it's trying to be iTunes, but it's using UI elements that look like their from Windows 2000 or something.

So yeah the readers look beautiful, but I can't stand the software so I'm going to pass.
