Same goes with the movie industry. We'd have had high definition video with lossless audio recording capabilities ages ago if the "regulation" wasn't in place. It will be a flat fee for access to services such as voice, movies, music, GPS, e-mail and texting, and then you pay for data no matter what that data is. I said HD video capture. Did you miss the ruling about it being illegal to break DVD encryption? Well that policy has been around well before that. It's what stops companies from making HD video backup devices. Tivo and the like are mediocre at best. Pretty darn close to when AT&T loses it's exclusivity deal with Apple. It goes through the voice portion of the network using space that was originally left open for the carrier to send update and system messages to the device.  Carriers realized they were only using that part of the system to less than 1% of it's ability, and now you can send 151 character messages on it.  This is all pure profit for the phone companies.  The only real cost for text messaging is on the support/maintenance side of things.  The fact that it costs more for unlimited text messaging than unlimited data on some phones is mind boggling to me... The FCC and other federal entities are talking about expanding the broadband availability in the US. Then you hear about the European union, or was it Germany/Britain talking about expanded wireless networks and research that have 400 times the bandwidth, speed, and availability of 4G. Why would the federal government in the US be trying to increase broadband in land based product it makes no sense to me. <br><br>If they would concentrate on wireless the landmass (and amount of users) covered for the price would greatly out span doing it as land based on a network basis. Plus the fact and I guess the main beneficial thing about wireless coverage is it hit's everywhere in it's broadcast span.<br><br>From what I have heard I think they are trying to distribute 2.5 billion in grants for expanded communications. Even after making us sign a contract, they keep the monthly prices so high, for such a terrible service.<br><br>I was once told by AT&T CS that you can't have service without signing a contract :O.<br><br>This whole concept of cellphone contracts should be done away with. Or, contracts cannot be longer than the shelf life of the device. Being a great company doesn't mean you will not make a profit. The problem arises when your trying to wring every last penny out.<br><br>I know the companies you've mentioned have become monsters and addicts of anally raping consumers, but you and I don't have to take it. We don't have to complacently bend us over the desk and ream us at will. We can do something about it. First, we should give Gov the chance to do things the "democratic" way while warning them that if they cannot do their job, we will do it for them.
