Now you move it a little bit to the right, but not enough that it moves one pixel. Now you're going to have two half-red half-black pixels, so the computer knows the object is somewhere in between. By calculating exactly how much red and how much black there are in those two pixels, it can, in fact, have sub pixel accuracy.

10minutehobo

Comments on

You can go deeper than that, by calculating the % red shift in each pixel.

Burns11

Comments on

And yeah, it's a 640x480 camera, so it's going need the extra accuracy too.

10minutehobo

Comments on

So you say it's VGA subpixels, but the screen of the PS3 which has the objects on it being manipulated is bigger than 640x480, way bigger.
So yeah it's just throwing 'big' words around, it's a new paradigm of the synergy of the term sub and pixels.
That's just great.

Wwhat

Comments on

Well the footage is 640x480, but I am sure alot of games won't even show what the camera see's so it doesn't matter if it matches the resolution of you HD tv. It seems to do calculations by focusing on the ball and gauge its 3d position by ball size and placement, and detects changes in that placement by comparing the pixels of previous frames ball size and placement to current frames, all while processing the accelerometer data too. Considering the camera doesn't compress the image that it receives at all, that means essentially every pixel is represented accurately and so it is fit to be used for motion control. As for the term "Sub-pixel precision", i'm sure its just a marketing word, but it also could be accounting for the fact that it's so accurate including the data from the gyro's and such that its measurements go beyond just the pixels themselves, and can represent itself accurately pixel by pixel, within a 1080p rendered game.

Will

Comments on

i thought sony was a japanese company, why is this white dude designing things.

Alex

Comments on

Sony has many subdivisions, and sony america is pretty big, but it's a valid question since so man of those R&D stories come from japan and now this sony one it's not japanese, so if anybody has an answer?

Wwhat

Comments on

Newsflash - multinational companies to tend to hire all sorts of people.
