We can't say that the idea of
stereoscopic displays on cellphones ever really appealed to us -- more than anything, it sounds like the recipe for a nasty migraine. But provided a company figures out how to do it right (and without the
silly glasses) true 3D could lead to some pretty interesting interface design, to say the very least. With Sony
singing the technology's praises at IFA this morning, it's fitting that Nokia is showing off one such number at Nokia World in Stuttgart today. According to
Pocket-lint, the N810 Internet Tablet shown above has been outfitted with a "special screen" made by a "secret third party manufacturer" and displays 3D content to the naked eye. Sure, we're pretty skeptical that 3D will be a hit (or even stop being lousy) any time soon, but who knows? There seem to be a few companies out there who think that it could pull them out of
their doldrums.

Nokia is stupid for not waiting for Apple to release their tablet.
You're stupid for mentioning Apple.
And why is that? Explain, why Nokia would do the "me too" or "catch up" to apples itablet.
Maybe Apples strategy is to just keep leeking rumors about an upcoming tablet that doesn't really exist, thereby keeping everyone else postponing their products in perpetuity.
Why was this not put in the N900, if it does not uses the glasses, with option to turn on and off, would have been an nice feature.
It's probably too expensive and hasn't been tested enough.
It looks nice though. I wonder what kind of technology it uses, i hope it's something more sophisticated than the lens system which only works if the screen is horizontal.
i love the irony of gadget enthusiast taking a photo of a new gadget, yet he is only capable of taking crappy blurry photos with his own gadget.
Technically, Nokia's 'new _GADGET_' is the N86.
Damn, I'm good.
LOLOL!!!
so so so true!
How exactly would you take a good picture of a 3D display that showed its 3D?
As for general crappiness, its originally a 180x180 pixel picxture thats interpolated to bigger. Anyboody expecting a good picture has taken too mutch lsd, or watched too many unrealistic CSI episodes.
I dont know about you guys but I am so over this whole 3D push. Give it up, it didn't work with the stupid red and blue glasses and it still does not work with the polarized glasses. Still looks rubbish.
Wasn't the HD 1080p upgrade push enough for these people - now they have to try to push a new worthless tech on us just to get another upgrade cycle going?
I mean I think we needed 1080p but I don't think we need a technology that requires me to wear another (on top of prescription) pair of glasses. Not to mention all the color depth and brightness you loose while wearing those things.
So you don't want 3D.
But I do.
I vote they go ahead, for my sake.
Don't worry, it's just a 3D option. If you like your current 2D, you can keep your current 2D. No one will come to take your 2D display away. At least, not at first.
Actually these N810s with autostereoscopic displays are nothing new. Nokia has been showing these puppies in public for at least 2-3 years. If I remember correctly they're using lenticular lenses to produce the 3D effect.
Anyway, even though it's actually quite fun to use and watch these screens, the tech has still issues when it comes to viewing angles etc.
But it's not lousy, it just really doesn't offer anything extra at the moment because the depth of the effect is not so big as it could be e.g. in cinemas with 3D glasses. Plus Nokia even had to order the material (videos etc.) they're showing of with these devices, so there's really no content even available.
Anyway, I've used one of those: 3D is a neat thing and devices are fun to use, but don't expect real products anytime soon. They're just tech demos, atm. But who knows what the NRC wizards have been doing in their dark basements.
but it will offer things extra in the future, for example, when black and white TV's went to colour TV's most channels were still b+w
when 4:3 tv's went 16:9, most tv shows were in 4:3
when SD went HD, there was hardly any content about, now look, eveythings in 16:9 colour at high definition.
so just give a while, sky have launched a 3d tv channel, so theres is still hope yet ... (yn)
omg it looks just like apple's non existent tablet!@@~~~!!!41 doesn't anyone have any original idease anymroe!!!!!@!!!@>?!
calm down dude, the n810's design has been out long before apple even thought about a tablet, so just keep taking your fanboi chillpills and buy the macbook wheel
It's called sarcasm.
I thought it was pretty obvious. :/
Man, I hate 3D too.
I hate it so much, I'm thinking of putting out one of my eyes so that I see everything in 2D.
Because 2D is so much more natural.
Or something.
After the eye is gone, I'm going to jam a pencil in my ear. Tired of stereo music too.

From that page you can also download the source code for the 3D video codec (based on the recent ITU-T, ISO-IEC standard MVC) and play with it yourself.
