They will never be sold and will probably just get trashed later.  Many other manufacturers (not just camera makers) do this. Cleaning the sensor is pretty routine and these cameras have a self cleaning feature as well.  What other harm could come from having it open to quickly show the speed of the camera? One company I worked for before (not photog related) used for demo purposes defective units from first mass-produced bulk: they look like real product but as all first units contain number of glitches. They used in labs to "debug" manufacturing process, for test purposes and - being completely totaled after all that - as demo units customers can freely touch.<br><br>> I'm sure Canon can just make another one, I mean it probably costs them about $62.87 in raw materials to produce each one.<br><br>Most cameras are hand assembled. Throw in QA and you might get into $100-200 territory. And that's without raw parts.<br><br>Plus if I'm not mistaken, Canon's sensor is relatively expensive to manufacture. Sensor on full-frame bodies was rumored to cost $200-300 what was said to be four times price of APS-C sensor. That means normal Canon's sensor goes for around $50-75.<br><br>IOW, even demo unit cost a serious buck. After all it must be same as unit on sale - or it's unqualified as demo unit.<br><br>> Besides, anyone who owns a decent camera knows that they have self-cleaning sensors these days.<br><br>Apparently you yourself do not own a decent camera. Because then you would have known that self-cleaning technology isn't a panacea and can't remove e.g. fats (== fingerprints) and pollen. Just on feel alone, the xxd/xd series cameras are far more comfortable to hold and use. This camera appeals primarily to tech-heads who in all likelihood couldn't make a decent photograph to save their lives. Rockwell a Nikon D40 or similar for regular people. True pros need exotic equipment for their own reasons (usually ruggedness, weather-proof, etc). No pro would be a customer for this or similar cameras aimed at gadget freaks. <br><br>Your money would be far better spent taking some classes in basic composition, drawing, etc so that you can learn how to make pictures people might want to see. Saying that professional photographers wouldn't like this is an incorrect assumption.  A lot of my colleagues also want this camera.  I don't know what "exotic" equipment you speak of... most of the photographers around here have Canon 5D's or the Nikon equivelant, or even 50D's (or earlier models) or 5D Mark II.  Those are certainly not exotic.  There's the occassional photographer who shoots large format... but that's not unusual either. The "gotta have the latest and greatest" will always be there (that's what this site caters to) but they are not in my experience typical of people whose primary love is photography per se.<br><br>This reminds me of people who buy cars like the Corvette or a 911. Sure, they are great to have if you have the money. They are also vastly beyond the capabilities of at least 90% of their owners. This was demonstrated not long ago, when a race-talented 16 year old girl beat a passle of 911-driving bald 50-something guys in her rented Cavalier on a technical track. <br><br>Gadget-lust isn't particularly rewarding in the long run. I didn't get the point of your comment till after reading your second comment.  <br><br>Yes we are in a world of wanting the latest and greatest, even if we don't know how to use it.  I just returned from a vacation in Alaska, a place where photography is plentiful, and am amazed on all the people with DSLR's and have no clue how to use them, other than to set it to "the green box" and click away.  Why do they buy a DSLR? I can get just as good of pictures with my $100 point and shoot.  Why? Cuz I know how to use it.  What does that little lighting bolt mean anyway?  Gotta love people taking a picture of a vast mountain scenery and have their little pop-up flash lighting up the multi-thousand feet mountain. <br><br>I'm by far a master photographer, professional only if the definition is making money with photography, but I know the basics on how to use my camera. The 5D's AF system is a bit long in the tooth, and it all feels a little sluggish compared to this beast.
