A normal TV that alternates frames for each eye and a pair of glasses that darken one lense or the oher depending of the current frame being displayes. you could do this with a normal TV, but it only makes sense with a TV with a high refresh rate.
2. A TV that has alternating pixels with diferent polarization. you "only" need a pair of glasses with lenses with diferent polarizations. I Believe Bravia 3D will use this technology. You need a special TV for this.

They COULD just use a simple video filter, and then it would work on any game, with any TV, and you would need some kind of glasses (there a ton of different types/ways to do this without needing a special screen, this isn't new tech), but no, they won't. They want you to buy more crap you don't need. Hell, They could even render it differently instead of relying on a filter that may not be accurate all the time but that would only require them to spend money! They could do the same thing for 3D blu-ray movies, but again, they won't.

Trackmania is a pretty good but not perfect example. You can just go into the menu and flip the 3D filter on and off whenever you want, play with standard Red/Blue glasses. Before anyone gets all uptight about this I already said it wasn't a perfect example, I know what your idiotic rebuttal is already, don't bother.

That said, If the TV companies and movie studios have decided that 3D is the next thing to drive sales, don't be surprised if you need to buy a new TV, Blu-ray player and new disks before you get 3D.


As far as consoles go, I don't think that the 360 or the PS3 have the GPU or frame buffer to drive the required frames for quality 3D at HD resolutions.

Jon: it's possible with 60hz sure, but each eye will receive a flickering 30hz image. It's pretty horrible, take it from me. I played a few PC games back in the day with a CRT, LCD shutter glasses and an old nVidia 3D driver... it was only tolerable when my monitor was set to a 100hz refresh rate or above. Refresh rates below 100hz are a serious eye-killer... not even tolerable for a second at 60hz. Whatever dumbass at Engadget who talked to Sony was too clueless to understand that games aren't going to magically support 3D mode.

There will be a firmware update to add support for this next year.

The PS3 SDK gets updated so devs can use the 3D support in their games - some already have it.

Some games like Wipeout HD will get patches after the firmware with 3D support comes out. New games that make sense in 3D and the developer decides to support the mode will have it implemented in new games.

blue & red don't work great.
polarized works ok(ish) but colors tend to fade, polarized filters do modify colors, just have to take them of when watching the screen to realise!
I think the best way is the flickering glasses, because it only plays with image perspective displayed to your eyes, it doesn't alterate the picture at all unlike blue and red or polarized glasses. It works the same as your vision, two eyes see at diferents angles.
The only thing is that you will need a higher refresh rate, wich means new TV unfortunately.
Gaming in 3D sounds awesome to me, I loved the Nvidia glasses a while back, it gave a great effect without affecting colors.
