Which again shows how behind Leica is in sensor technology. With full-frame sensors hitting ISO 25,600 these days, Leica's low-light performance is absolutely pathetic.

This especially problematic since the Leica M8 has had so much problems with IR sensitivity and color representation with their CCD sensors. It would have been much better if they decided to go with a full-frame CMOS sensor like everyone else. We live in a world where full-frame 24.6MP CMOS cameras are being sold for less then $2,000 (the Alpha-850), its not unreasonable to have a $6,000 camera to have a modern sensor.

What's the point of buying a $11,000+ Leica Noctilux F0.95 50mm lens from them if the sensor's low-light capability is going to be several stops worse then a camera a fraction of the price. You probably would get better image-quality and low-light performance on a Canon Rebel with a $100 lens then M9 with a $11k Noctilux.

Boudu

Comments on Leica M9 microsite and brochure leaked, new X1 details in tow

From what I have read, the M9 really should be called the Leica M8.3 because they have finally sorted through all the problems with the M8.

I am more interested in the X1. Similar to CRTs vs. plasma and LCDs, there are applications where the older CRT technology still has it's merits. And CCDs can still outperform CMOS in some areas and applications.

Admittedly, for full-frame and most APS sized photo imaging sensors, CMOS technology is matured enough to overcome its initial disadvantages -- lower fill-factor due to having some of the sensor area dedicated to circuitry, higher per-pixel noise due to requiring on chip analog-to-digital converters, and although not as critical in still photography, the typical rolling shutters implemented in most CMOS designs (to improve fill-factor) can some times produce some odd imaging effects (distortion, bending or warping of objects), among other things.

Advanced microlenses like those in Canon's current CMOS sensors can minimize fill-factor losses due to the need to pass light through circuitry, and back-illuminated sensors, like Sony's Exmor-R, eliminate the fill-factor issues altogether. Improved noise reduction techniques have improved the CMOS sensor's signal-to-noise ratio to where they are equal to CCDs at low sensitivities and generally outperform them at high sensitivities -- at least at these sensor sizes.

That's not to say that CMOS sensors should be used exclusively for these applications. And I'm not saying that Leica is right in choosing to stick with CCDs in their M cameras. You'd probably have to ask a Leica engineer to find out the real reason why. I'm just saying that to argue for a CMOS sensor for the sake of putting one in because of perceived benefits or because everyone else is using them is pretty short-sighted. It's not like CCD technology has reached its limits yet.

Willen

Comments on Leica M9 microsite and brochure leaked, new X1 details in tow

" Just think if Leica came out with a μ4/3 body with a similar design to the Digilux 3, 4/3 camera (with equivalent performance specs to the new Lumix GF1)?"

I did, and it would be lame: How on earth is a Leica badged GF-1 defining a whole new genre, even if it was styled after a Digilux 3 (itself a re-badged L1)?
