The ideal solution would be for car makers to offer a standard (like DIN) "car media slot" that is basically a rectangular hole in the center console. This slot gets fed the GPS antenna, radio antenna, speaker (or maybe power amp input) connections, etc. Then people like Garmin, Sony, Apple can make compatible devices. Then my $1500 built in GPS, that's obsolete 12 months after I buy the car, can be upgraded without the wire mess. I wouldn't even mind so much if they charged me $1500 for the hole. That *would* be a bit of a ripoff, but at least I would have *some* kind of upgrade path. Now my only option is to live with a lousy user interface (compared to Garmin or Tomtom) or stick a new aftermarket GPS over the screen in my car.

lens42

Comments on APSI 100 GPS packs removable PMP, can't be removed from South Korea

What's great about consumer tech like this GPS sold in Korea is that it's worth a fraction of the price compared to expensive, featureless 2D navi's that are sold in the US.
