I don't disagree with you in general, but Snow Leopard is a far cry more stable than the original release of Leopard. Really, the only thing unstable about it are programs that are no longer completely compatible (which are few).

According to Apple, SL was intended to be a stability, performance, and efficiency release, so it might be worth not waiting too long.

To be honest, I have not been impressed with Snow Leopard. It is more stable than Leopard was on Day 1 but that's hardly something to crow about since I had kernel panics back then. While a lot of the issues are indeed caused by 3rd party applications I continue to have problems with Apple's own Mail application, which crashes frequently when you attempt to add an attachment, for example. I wouldn't mind so much but the issues I have been having were on a clean install so everything should be perfect.

Overall, Snow Leopard has failed to deliver improved performance, improved stability and improved security. The only way is up at this point but I am honestly stunned that Apple didn't get this one right on Day 1 given its remit. Most of the time the security holes are remedied by Security Updates (as can be seen on the Apple download page) with namings like "Security Update ", although some of it are pretty late (such as Java update). An as for the point update (consider the case of 10.5.x), most of the time it's focusing on instability issues and even enhancements (on performance and responsiveness), bundled with previously released security updates and firmware updates (between point updates).

So yup, for most of the time it does seems to me that point updates (e.g. 10.5.x) are service packs. Now only if Microsoft's UAC wasn't as ugly as OSX's 'admin' password prompt. Vista seems to do it way too frequently and when it does, *BOOM* black screen for a few seconds...

I don't know if its gonna Blue Screen or even comeback. To me, it interrupts other processes like text I'm reading in another web page or application. Also, its modal.. .so you have to freeze everything. Overall it just plain sucks.

10.5 to 10.6 isn't a service pack, either, that's like Vista to 7 (not Xp to Vista).

Some OS X point updates are more significant than others. SOME could be seen to be as major as a service pack (like where Apple redid the video subsystem in OS X 10.4.3).
