Look at 4:3, 16:9, and 16:10 monitors. With both aspect ratios, 17" is measured by the diagonal, and the screen area doesn't matter. Those screens are way to far apart from each other.  Those are pretty thick frames on the screens and then there is an extra bit in the middle.  The idea is you want as little in between the screens as possible.
