JingJing and PuiPui bots followup on the BHR tai chi bots, give a good interview
The fine folks at the Beijing Institute of Technology just unveiled a pair of new bots, dubbed JingJing and PuiPui. Back in 2003 BIT was showing off its BHR-1 and BHR-2 bots, life-sized humanoids that can do tai chi, and these new bots keep their predecessor's martial arts capabilities but add in some conversational skills. During what sounds to have been a charming unveiling, the bots answered questions from the audience, self-identifying themselves as humanoid robots to an enraptured crowd. Their creator claims we're entering a personal computer revolution-style era with robots, and while we've heard that claim before, boy do we want to believe it! Check out a video of the original BHR series performing their moves to an epic soundtrack after the break.

And the takeover begins
Beijing Institute of Technology is SkyNet.....
hahahahha...
I wouldn't be worried too much about a takeover if those bots have to be carted around everywhere with engine lifts. Hell at least the Japanese robots can stand on their own.
Add some antennas to improve TV reception?
inteller: if you are intelligent enough to check the read link you'll see a picture where the duo are standing on their own.
inteller: they can stand on their own and perform tai chi now...you'll be sorry for insulting our new kung fu robot overlords when they get the tiger style firmware upgrade.
YOUR TROLL STYLE IS NO MATCH FOR MY TIGER STYLE!!!
so they require that engine lift when they are sleeping? whatever.
And then they fall over and it's - well ... all over!?
Photos like this help fan the stereotype that Asians are born knowing karate.
You mean they aren't?
The pewpew bot? Cool.
Hopefully they didn't mount anything that goes pew pew.
LOL, that's exactly what I thought, PuiPui sounds just like PewPew in Mandarin.
you can't tell but that kid is about to kick your ass

"Show me."
Skynet is now self aware.
2012... humans vs taichi robots.. epic war lol
i'll kill jingjing and puipui with my *pew pew* laser
pui pui pui
I think I got the translation wrong, the name is likely BeiBei and not PuiPui, sorry!
Thanks for the info earlier, makes sense actually!
The overdone T2 version of the "Wong Fei Huang" soundtrack definately doesn't do it for me. I'm pretty disappointed. I was expecting something worth watching, something at least on par with South Korea. There's thousands of individual hobbyist attempts with better dexterity, balance. They definately throttled the performance back because the robots were so wobbly with their feet bearly off the ground. The pendulum effect just isn't being handled with software, so they opt for slow enough movements for the effect to work itself out on its own. If this is China's best, then other developed nations (particularly US, Japan and Korea) got nothing to worry about. Better luck next time China. Bother us when you got something worth our attention.
Those were the older generation. I believe the new ones did put on a tai chi display, I just can't find the video of it - it's possible they have worked out the balancing issue by now. Also, as far as "robot nationality" is concerned, you will find that most robotics labs are made up of a variety of individuals from around the world.

We all know where this is leading. Have these guys never watched an episode of Doctor Who?
How can you do "Tai Chi" (太極) without "Chi" (氣)?
I for one welcome our new tai chi overlords.
bah .. they look like cheap knock offs of Asimo
*cough* bad copy of asimo
But that other one looks remarkably like a little human boy.
