DS, Korg DS-10's formant synthesis used to create Daft Punk vocals, general awesomeness
You know, sometimes at Engadget, we feel compelled to cover a story not because it's particularly new, or newsy, or relevant to the topics of the day. Sometimes, you just have to cover something because it's amazingly cool. Enter this completely awesome video from the musician Denkitribe, wherein the DS, Korg DS-10 software, the software's formant synthesis, and the natural talents of said musician are used to replicate the vocals from Daft Punk's hit "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger." There's not much we can put in text which this doesn't lay out in song. Check the whole thing after the break... you'll thank us later.

Then it sounds like you won't have a decade to spam us after all.
Just so you know, it doesn't matter how many engadget accounts you have, they can ban all of them in one go. Something to do with IP addresses I believe. And this is not the way to go about advertising your site. Everyone will hate it without looking at it, because you spammed it. Just a tip.
first.
pretty awesome.
Neat
Google, you seem desperate for attention- unlike the real Google. WHO ARE YOU!?!?!?!
Epic win
I was even listening to Daft Punk when I saw this article!
That's not awesome. That's HORRIBLE. Nails on a chalkboard horrible.
Ok, I hear Kayne West...
"Well DS Developer, I like your version of Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger and I am gonna let you finish coding... but my version of "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" was the best version of all time"
:O
best use of a DS yet
I love my DS lite.
I'm looking for Mike, have you seen him? The last thing he said was something about his phone, then he went missing.
I dunno, I think video games are pretty cool.
What about Scribblenauts? I bought a DS for that!
there's already apps for iphone like this, but it just looks more fun with a stylus.
Good call, Mike! Why should anyone have a hobby if there's already an iPhone app that does the same thing!
I have an iPhone app that poops for me, but it just looks more fun with a stylus.
google, I am not even going to bother going to your website. anyone who spams their this everywhere doesn't deserve help. grow up or get lost.
Agreed, unfortunately. Luckily the bastid should get permabanned if anyone is awake at Engadget HQ on a Saturday night.
"that guitar is talking" simpsons
Nice
Nice work!
That video is awesome. Too bad it had to be ruined by a certain 2 g, 2 o, 1 l, and 1 e loser.
I wish I got a better education. I would love to be able to program something like that! AWESOME!
Like I said before google, wikipedia won that round. Better luck next time.
awsome. this is why i read engadget.
i wish i knew where you lived you slimy bastard.
yeah, how dare you read and enjoy engadget!
@andres
I guess there was a spammer/troll here that had its comments deleted...?
i know, i was just taking advantage of the comedic situation left behind
Google, we don't take kindly to your kind around here...
Good find.. between this and nitro tracker you could have a studio with nothing more than an army of DS's and a 8-track.
That was meant for Google, sorry.
He did a pretty damn good job actually, congrats. Although I was hoping this would be for some hack or something to input vocals, thus, the ds vocoder. Man someone should do that.
Sorry bout that! It was a reply to google's comments, but I guess that got screwed up.... Sorry!
I have wanted to buy this for awhile now..... no reason to stop me now....
hope I can create anything as half as good as that...
Hey google! It's called wikipedia, and it already won that battle. It's like trying to make a fantasy MMO after WoW. WoW won that round, so people need to beat actiblizzard at something else. Wikipedia beat you on this front, find something else. And yes, I visited your site, I'm sorry to say.
Wow. That dude is BANNED.
I don't really know what you were getting at with your reply to my post, but I didn't advertise shit. I assume you were just mistaken.
it's cool, i see it happened to some other people too. I didn't notice the google shit till I got your comment, hah. it's cool.
This is so cool, I just happened to be listening to Daft punk to when I pulled up Engadget and saw this.
@google
If you even reply to my comment I am pulling all of your information and killing your computer and your precious wurow.com!
I deleted them all! Don't want anyone going there. Peace.
Wow, all google's comments were removed already? That's fast. Now we all look crazy though. Replying to nonexistent people/ comments....
that was awesome!
You guys are all crazy..Stop hitting the smack and talking to imaginary posts.....
And now for a comment that actually relates to the story: I'd love to know how many hours were put into that. That's just pure commitment.
Oh, and the events of today will always be remembered on engadget as the day that google died, and no one who wasn't here for this will have a clue what anyone is talking about.
Wow, I... just wow.
Wow! I've always wondered how they do that...
Video Remix That was some Sick Shit!
"Mike @ Sep 26th 2009 11:39PM
there's already apps for iphone like this, but it just looks more fun with a stylus."
ignorant comments like this are ridiculous. iphoners, do you really have a clue on comparing ds software with 3 dollar iphone apps. seriously!!???? the ds korg is a fully functional drum machine and sequencer. iphone has junky t-pain gimmick apps. when will iphoners educate themselves? this ignorance begets ignorance and after awhile, everyone owns an iphone and is happy with the inferior software, the restrictions (mms new!! haha. what a joke, pay for tethering, etc), and starts being happy to be just like everyone else with no individuality!!! get a ds, use a blackberry, create your own trends, and most importantly, support open source software!!!!!!!! real electronics fans who actually know how complex and clearly awesome the ds10 korg program is rejoice!!!
You haven't actually used the iPod's synthesizers, have you? Because they exist, and, uh, they actually don't suck.
Case in point: iSyn, which you can read about on their website here: http://www.isynapp.com/
I mean, much love to the DS-10 and whatnot [though I really like my Micron and, tbh, can't stand the portable synths - something I learned with experience], but to say that the iPod just has garbage is plain wrong.
???
Have you even tried the iDaft iPhone app? "the ds korg is a fully functional drum machine and sequencer", sure, but in terms of reproducing the original DaftPunk track, the iPhone app is brilliant as it includes both original sound effects, and original melody, provided by Daft Punk themselves. It's not a matter of one is better than other, they don't do the same things. Stop bitching.
But that's beside the point, this is not about the iPhone app.
For those here who have not seen it/them yet, make sure you search youtube for 'daft hands', and then 'daft bodies'. Very impressive too, especially when the tempo picks up :)
GM
Germain, the iPhone app (although I've never used it) sounds from your description to be sample-based. You obviously don't know much about electronic music. Anybody could make an app that plays little embedded audio clips. This guy reproduced the tones using (limited) synthesis...you know, real talent!
I see. I fail to get as excited by this as I do by the sampling app, but, fair enough.
I want to criticize the iphone apps but seriously, apps like 8bitone makes me want to get one- well at least an ipod touch I don't want to switch my phone
This is so win! :P
Stanley:
Get and iPhone open the app store, go to search, type synth and educate yourself
Or, if you already have an iphone, get your iphone throw it in the nearest river and free yourself.
I'm so confused. These comments make no sense without Google. I know they c&d'd cyanogen but that's not what this article is about.
he was a troll promoting his website
This is really cool! Thanks for posting this Engadget!
Really cool :)
If you're looking for something like the DS-10 on the iPhone, check out bleep!BOX
Sheer genius.
Nice to have some dialogue. First off, Iphone synthesizers..."You haven't actually used the iPod's synthesizers, have you?"-Sam. Dude, I have isyn on my ipod touch, player (and i'll concede, the drum pad is pretty usable but). Unlike most, i buy the product and use it and then talk about its flaws in the hopes that people stop settling for so little (play madden on a iphone then a ds)...That and daft punk's app (apples and oranges indeed, Germain... next to the korg ds-10, they're a joke (see 'themovielife's' very educated and insightful comment on embedded audio clips)...Germain is right, this is not about iphones which was my main complaint (and not even about the stupid daft punk song. and yes, isyn is decent but the post isn't about some kid making something on an iphone, its a ds post) this is on the brilliance of some kid making that song (ON A DS), and voice tones from scratch (for those of you who dont' know, when you turn on a ds-10 it gives you NOTHING. no embedded clips, no voice samples, the dude tweaked it himself so huuuuge props. if more people would start learning how to do real DIY instead of buying programs which do all the dirty work for you (see daft punk app) then tech would grow exponentially. Germain, get that four dollar starbucks coffee you buy and unbutton one of those buttons of your collared tucked in shirt and chill out, boo. And give us the url to your youtube video where youre dancing around to that idiotic song in your ikea living room. We'd all like to see it...
My tmobile G1 had a Daft punk soundboard that only had the stuff from this song... i was wanting
Around the world, Around the world!
Except there's no such thing as "formant synthesis" on the DS-10. This guy has merely been damn clever programming and automating individual analog synth patches. You're not giving him nearly enough credit.
woooooooooooo!!!!!! freaking amazing... I'll buy a DS just to play HBFS over and over....
