Acer A1 Android phone listed for pre-order with 768MHz processor
We'd been hearing that Acer's Android-based A1 smartphone would be hitting this month, and while we still haven't heard anything official, it's just gone up for pre-order at Expansys. The spec sheet is rather intriguing, since it lists Android 2.0 Donut and a 768MHz Qualcomm 8250 processor, which is a 240MHz bump over every other Android set on the market right now. Pre-orders aren't insane at €389 ($571), but we'll see what official pricing and carrier support look like before we reach for our wallets.

Interesting , since its android could it run Sense, or other flavors of android without any major modding ?
DR HOUSE, next year everyone will have 1GHz or even more
Btw, nice price for Android phone
Apple wont just do HD my friend it will evolve it into something the consumer needs .
its not so much apple hating, its more that the above question was about os compatibility for an android handset... and your comment has nothing to do with it. Its not that we are apple haters, its that we hate you
@Drhouse, will that be with or without MMS.
@Absolute, I don't think you should change the ROM without a permission slip signed by google. Unless you leave the google apps out.
Evan the nazzis are pissed about that one.

Dr House go troll on OCN not here.
@Dr House: you only bought an iPhone, you didn't invent it, so get over yourself and go away.
It will not be easy to switch to Sense UI without major work. This is because it will need rooting and a custom ROM (Google basically killed the custom ROM community with it's C&D notice to Cyanogen). Even with custom ROMs completely unrestricted it will be more of a challenge to port Sense UI over to this phone since it uses a different processor. Also Sense UI belongs to HTC and this is an Acer phone, so the legality of doing so is also in question. The closest thing is probably themes and home replacements.
@Iain
Try not to feed the troll, esp. one that is so obvious.
this phone doesnt look half bad, wonder if its coming to verizon.
oh yeah and i got a laugh out of house's first comments, its amazing if he actually believes the stuff he types.
and oh yeah, the iphone could have all the horsepower to run an HD capture/playback ... but when you have cell phone optics you are NEVER going to get the quality even close a 3 megapixel point and shoot real camera.
Oh hell no please don't troll OCN go troll Gaia or something.
I'm not trolling, i said the freaking iphone can't even multi task yet but if i had to chose between easy+superior UI versus complicated UI and OS that lack even the basic media playback i'll chose the first.
Stop being over sensitive just because someone prefer another phone than your beloved android.
I'd buy android phone if the thing actually deliver, so far android = Empty promise.
you guys are trolling me just because i prefer the iphone, welcome to the REAL world where the iphone is the best selling smartphone.
I died a little inside for owning an iphone after I read DR House's comments...
@ DR House
I hate to burst your Apple shaped bubble buddy.

iPhone isn't the best selling smartphone. Maybe if you grouped the iPhone, iPhone 3G, and iPhone 3GS together it beats out every other phone in sales (I say maybe because I recall a report stating the Blackberry Curve 83xx line having better sales), but technically if you did that you'd also have to take any one company and put all their random phones together too and collect their sales.
RIM has 52% of the market share (read: link). Apple doesn't.
Granted, the iPhone 3GS is a good phone, I enjoy the app store (Peggle and Wolfenstine), but wanting a better phone to come out and beat the crap out of my iPhone is something I'd love to happen so I can pick up the much better product. I can't stand Apple fanbois (fanboys? fanboies?) who try and kill another great product because they fear that they have invested their cash in an inferior product.
Its the same thing you folks do with other products that's superior to an Apple product (ex. Zune HD, any other smartphone, any new computer line, Chrome OS, Google Voice, Windows 7, Linux, etc.) or at least introduces new features that Apple should consider incorporating into their own products (such as multitasking in the iPhone, or Google Voice in the iPhone).
So, to DR House and any other Apple fanboies, boys, bois, or whatever: Lets see some of that Apple enthusiasm placed where it belongs... Contacting Apple and telling them what features you want in their next product.
@DR House
I have one VERY simple question for you.
If you are so happy with your trendy iPhone, and you think no phone can even touch it, then why did you even click on the link to come to this post?
I think I know why, every time a new smart phone pops on the market you get worried that it might out perform your precious iPhone. So when someone posts about it you feel the need to go there and spam your nonsense hoping that you might convert anyone who might be on the fence between a new / different smart phone and an iPhone.
Well, most of what you say is nonsense. You dont research anything and you just go off what Apple tells you. If you had ever used an Android phone you would know that the UI is just as good as the iPhone - maybe even better.
So, please, stop acting like a little baby and stay off these threds, you just make your self look so so stupid.
Oh also for your info: us poor people CAN afford iPhones (I've had 2) but I actually like my Palm Pre better then my iPhone 3G. Plus the fact that iPhones are only $99 now for the 2G LOL.
@DR House
Actually now that I'm FINALLY out of contract on my 1st gen iPhone, I'm only waiting for a decent Android phone(one with snapdragon or tegra) to be released so I can jump ship. iPhone is the only Apple product I've ever bought, and it will be the last. There closed system and making me use iTunes is more than I can bear. To be fair though, I've had some fun with the app store.
@DR House
Yes, because Apple is so different than anything else out on the market.
You want to be really different?
Buy a Palm Pre.
@DrHouse
For a doctor, you sure aren't that smart. Couple of discrepancies in your post.
1.) Snapdragon/Tegra are not made for anything other than WinMo and Android. With Symbian also being an additional factor for one of them (forgot which one though).
2.) Apple will never move away from their SoC because of how much they have a hand in it.
3.) Apple's UI is ANYTHING but superior. It's simplistic...that's the catch of it, the reason it sells (in a far second place to the App Store)
I'm not going to bash any other hardware as fact, believe what you want. But superior is such a subjective word. If you feel you need to tout your over the top like for a company, do so in the comfort of your own Apple-covered room. =]
... but it's an Acer
WOW, well we'll see how it'll work. But I don't see anyone lining up for it.
Maybe if the 768MHz was quad core! I'd spring $500+ for that. Not sure how they keep coming out with all these phones at ridiculously high prices, unless you get a contract. Eventually everyone will have a cell and contract, and these prices will have to drop you you can get a new one without waiting for your contract to expire... Or better yet, get rid of the contract all together!
So android definitely isn't tied down to the same hardware? HTC just couldn't grasp the idea of faster hardware.
Er, yes it is just now - it won't be until v2 that a lot of this superior hardware such as the higher-resolution screen will be supported.
There's a few handsets with superior hardware rumoured to be in the pipeline (such as the SE Xperia X3) but all of them are stuck there until v2 is released.
Initially it was in order to enable developers and phone makers to get used to the OS. The newer Donut version (should be 1.6 not 2.0 like the article says) added support for more screen sizes and CDMA. That is why we will see more diverse hardware coming, starting near the end of this year.
WTF is up with Europe and Android phones?? The US is a big market too, but they're leaving us high and dry.
The US isn't anything like as big a market as Europe.
Also, the fact that the US insists on having two competing network technologies means that you either have to go to the expense of producing two different versions of a handset or you immediately halve your potential sales.
Not to mention, even the GSM-based carriers in the US insist on using different frequencies to Europe, meaning you would again need to incur extra costs to try and crack the US - either by producing two different variants of the handset or by using more-expensive quad-band chips.
Factor into that the relatively backward nature of the US market, with the likes of the Razr still proving bafflingly popular and the fact that two year contracts appear to be the norm whereas in Europe 12- and 18-month deals are more prevalent, meaning customer change handsets less often, which also limits potential sales/profits.
When you look at it from a business point-of-view, it's hard to see why mobile phone companies bother with tyhe US at all...
@Iain.... You hit the nail on the head!!
i'd hit it.
Wow, my iMac "Snow" has a slower processor! (my iMac = 600mhz)
Donut > 1.6, i think
Wrong...
Donut = v1.6
source: http://www.tmonews.com/2009/09/mmmm-donuts/
lol nt flashman.
Do want! I can't wait, Personally I'm waiting for something like the G1, without a chin, slide out keyboard, camera + flash. Faster processor, more ram, thinner/light weight.
Once that comes up I will buy
few questions.
1) 2.0 donut?? I thought 1.6 was donut?? Someone enlighten me
2) Capacitive or Resistive?
3) It says 850/1900/2100 for HSPA so that means we can use it unlocked on AT&T's network right???
4) Does the camera have a flash? (HTC seems to think those are unnecessary)
Donut is a branch, not a version number. 1.6 is based on the Donut branch, and apparently 2.0 will be as well.
You only answered one of my questions
Android SDK 1.6 was for developement on donut. As for the OS, 1.5 was cupcake.
You can preorder it right now and use it on at&t's network.
can't help with the other 2
@Matt
Isn't 2.0 going to be based on the Eclair branch and 1.6 based on the Donut branch (yes this makes it so 2.0 includes Donut, but 2.0 should also include Eclair)?
@Nelagster
I guess you could always refuse to tip him?
@Jay
You're dang right I'm not gonna tip him!!
An Android phone that doesn't look like shit? Damn. Sign me up!
Cliq looks nice and so does the Hero, chin and no chin Cody.
kinda looks like the HTC Fuze to me
$571 isn't insane?
Yeah, the iphone is only 199, what a joke!
no its not bad especially since its unlock. the iphone unlock is $1000 as well as the palm pre
@AnotherDumbAmerican
shouldn't your handle be AnotherAllknowingInfallibleNonAmericanWhoLovesToProveHisIntelligenceOnTheInternet?
No, that would be silly.
Not bad :)
With Android phones, if you just send it out vanilla, people arent going to bite. The reason Hero is nice is because of Sense. The Cliq has motoblur. The beauti of android is the OEM can make it its own without really worrying about much else.
With that processor speed boost your calls will go 40% faster!
"Could you say that again, I didn't catch that..."
"Wait, one more time. A little slower..."
"I. said. speak. slower."
