Its also not really a software crop, its a sensor crop, only a cropped portion of the sensor is captured; which is why you have a drop in megapixels when doing this. A software crop is where the entire portion of the sensor is captured and then the unneeded portion cropped out via software, modern CMOS sensors can read a specific area of the sensor, hence cropped modes can be faster when reading a smaller portion of the sensor (the current D3 does 11fps in crop mode).

What would be a very good feature is if they had a "dial-a-crop" mode. 1.0x-2.0x, with .1 increments. Good for when you can sacrifice megapixels for speed and reach.

Temple

Comments on

Dialing a crop doesn't help much. Why can't the 5D MKIIdo it all? Nikon have clearly been able to get around that, and have the D3 and D700, both full frame, both high speed. Infact Nikon did exactly what Canon should do - merge it's two top end pro models.

Nikon managed to make the D700, which is full frame just like the 5D (and in the same price/customer bracket), and give it 8fps with the grip. The 5D's 3fps is laughable. I know, I used to have two of them.

That being said, I do actually prefer Canon. I MUCH prefer their lens ranges, the layouts of their cameras and all the functions. It's just that they have nothing that compares to the D3. Shame. I hope the 1D MKIV beats it so I can move back.

Cowprint

Comments on

Whoa there buddy. Buying a camera that doesn't meet your specs and then saying it's junk when it doesn't meet your specs seems like the wrong view to me. I'm not saying having to choose between video and high fps is fun, but if you need high fps and you choose the low fps camera, you've made a mistake of your own.

Nikon had a separate high speed line until a year ago on their high end, so I don't think the idea of having a separate high speed camera is as ridiculous as you say. I'm not saying making cameras slower is a great goal in and of itself, but throwing another thousand on the price of your consumer high-MP full frame dSLR so you can put more fps in isn't a slam dunk either. Sometimes you can't have it all at the price you want and companies have to make compromises. Nikon cut the MP, Canon cut the fps. Both are valid choices, with different trade-offs.

It sounds like you got the camera that fits your needs now. The 14-24 is an unbelievably great lens. Optically it blows anything else out there in its range. I used to shoot with Leicas, including the 19mm 2.8 (second version) which was one of the best wide angle lenses in existence. Not just ultra-wide; wide! And this Nikon Zoom is every bit as good.

(BTW, I shoot with Canons - a 1Ds Mark II and 5D Mark II - at work.) At a photo show, I showed the Canon rep my 14-24 and asked him when Canon was going to come out with something like it, and he conceded "We have nothing to match it." That's all he could say.

So, maybe this lens is too wide for you. This is the sharpest corner to corner wide-angle with close to no distortion, no flare, no vignetting, 20cm close focussing and it is the best normal wide angle ever made by Nikon AND Canon since they started making 35mm cameras! 17-24mm is too wide anyway if there is a person in the picture (egg and melonheads). It's the best zoom lens ever made. It's at the top of my to-buy list. However...it's impossible to get hold of. Noone stocks them anymore (in the UK), best option is to import from HK. Also it's not weather sealed. Some say it's as sealed as the Canon 17-40 when you put a UV filter on the front, but i'm not convinced.

@ Kevin Kao - The 17-55 is a DX crop lens. Waste of time on a D3. I wish that lens was FX though, i'd buy one in a second.

@ Eric - I'm a professional too...i'm press. The 14-24 was basically designed for press photographers and photojournalists. I've used it loads of times and just found it too wide. It's a brilliant lens though, i'm not doubting it's quality, i'm just saying it's NOT a replacement for the 17-35 which is what Nikon suggest. The front element is also a bit of a downer, I find myself constantly covering it with my hand so it doesn't get scratched. Also needs a bit more on the longer end...24 is still really wide.

I just want Nikon to upgrade the 17-35 - put some weather sealing on it.

Cowprint

Comments on

Wow, even if it's a crop mode, 14fps is AWESOME.
