Do you actually enjoy using a touch pad all the time, or lugging a mouse around with you? I hate touch pads because i find even the best of them are tedious to use for more then a few minutes. I just bought an Acer D150 netbook and the very first thing i did was tear it down to the chassis and put a touch screen on it. It is now a thousand times easier and more pleasant to use. Touch screens are completely intuitive and natural to use. (When was the last time you used an ATM that wasn't touch screen based?) I could care less about tablet functionality and every tablet i've seen wobbles all over the place when NOT in tablet mode and touched. the hinges on them all suck big time! That's not for me as i rarely use tablet mode anyway. I just want to be able to buy a touch screen portable pc's i don't have to gut and modify straight out of the box! I'm glad to see HP (and engadget) are finally getting with the program!

WmPenn

Comments on Touchscreen HP Pavilion dv3 leaks out, brings dm1 ultraportable and Core i7 dv8 along for the ride

Why does a touch screen only belong in the tablet and handheld categories? I don't get it... the alternative is to use a tiny PITA touch pad or lug a mouse around with you. Unlike the touchpad a touch screen is scaled 1:1 to the screen and layed right over top of it, and unlike the mouse it is always there and ready to use. Adding a touch screen to a portable pc seems like a no brainer to me...

WmPenn

Comments on Touchscreen HP Pavilion dv3 leaks out, brings dm1 ultraportable and Core i7 dv8 along for the ride

The problem is that, depending on how you are oriented to the laptop, you might have to reach out a bit to touch the screen. I bought dv3z model back in february and I am about to send it to second repair since it's still covered by the warranty. Lemme tell you 2 things that suck ass with the current dv3 model: built quality and heat management

1. some parts squeak and the whole laptop feel like being put together from thousand plasticky parts hold together with a damn glue stick. My screen bezel started peeling after 3.5 months from purchase date. the "chrome" looking borders along body squeak whenever I grab the laptop with one hand. I sent the machine once to HP so they can "fix" the bezel problem and it still loose.

2. The heat sink and air vent is so bad that the cooling fan will start spinning at full turbo speed within less than 5 minutes after booting up the machine. My 4-years old Averatec laptop doesn't heat up that bad...and that's averatec. I sent it for repair, along with the bezel issue, and it work slightly better. I ended up getting a lapdesk to keep the airflow clear and cool. oh btw, it wasn't dust issue, since I clean the machine quite regularly at least every couple weeks.

The whole touchscreen thing....I think it's more a gimmick than anything. I agree with some of the comments here. other "issues" that I think HP should improve with this model line up are the glossy body and screen (both are fingerprint and scratch magnet...especially if it's going to be touchscreen), better mic (the current model has one of the worst built-in mic that I've ever use), and better webcam (at least give us auto-focus and a decent image sensor that has decent noise reduction for the image quality)

ichigoismyhomie

Comments on Touchscreen HP Pavilion dv3 leaks out, brings dm1 ultraportable and Core i7 dv8 along for the ride

If Multitouch is ever going to avoid being the next SideShow, it has to start showing up on LARGER displays.

First, on 16 and 17 inch laptops, and then on the bigger desktop station displays.

If it doesn't start happening in the next 6 months, it will never happen.
