It can be placed on a desk, also on top to look like a picture frame, so the other ports, like the built-in gigabit switch, are accessible.

So, two USB ports. Problem is, it doesn't treat these as NAS expansion ports - NAS is limited to the one 2.5" drive slot - sorry, no 2GB 3.5" drive for you, either internal or external. The USB ports are for "SharePort", where a USB port can only be used by a single computer at a time. Granted, that gives flexibility of devices - the device doesn't need to support networkability, and the router doesn't need to support the specific device, since the computer just sees a local USB device. Sure, you can use USB storage, but it will be seen as directly-connected to one computer at a time; you won't be using the USB drive as your household media server.

This unit has other features too. But just realize that the storage features are a little more limited than you might expect.

Michael

Comments on D-Link Xtreme N DIR-685 storage router now shipping

This would be greatly improved by adding USB storage ports, or better yet, SATA or eSATA ports.

Michael

Comments on D-Link Xtreme N DIR-685 storage router now shipping

I looked through the gallery but can't be sure-- are there any wall-mounting holes molded into the back side?

This would make a great replacement for my Airport Extreme (which is starting to fail) but I might as well put this right on the door of my data closet instead of hiding it on top of a bookshelf.

John Sullivan

Comments on D-Link Xtreme N DIR-685 storage router now shipping

My mistake. A sheep with 5 legs and serious health issues. And half a year down the road its price is ridiculous too. A fast Netgear WNDR3700 N-router and a Netgear 1TB Stora NAS add up to about the same amount. And give you REAL performance. Otherwise the Dlink thing is great (until it falls apart after a week or two) - if you know how to operate a Space Shuttle (great review by David Pogue;) 'It’s the right idea. Unfortunately, D-Link is the wrong company to make it a reality.'

Big Rick

Comments on D-Link Xtreme N DIR-685 storage router now shipping

Does this include a print server?
