Each device you want to charge has to have something attached to it that can convert this magnetic field back into electricity, and then shunt that power into the device. It's the same effect as any electric toothbrush where the base plugs into the wall.

This means that the manufacturer has to create a converter for each specifc device, because each device has a different shape and power connector. So an iphone needs a special converter different than a Nintendo DS, for example. So unless they make a converter for your device, you can't use this system. And of course, the converter has to somehow attach to the device, which makes your device bulkier.

If this takes off, the manufacturer would then try to work with device manufacturers and battery manufacturers to develop integrated batteries that have the converter built in. Then they'd be far less bulky and wouldn't require you to buy an additonal converter. But this is a long shot unless
a) this company "owns" the market for "wireless" charging, and everyone wants to jump on board with them alone, or
b) an international body agrees on a standard for wireless charging so that every battery and device manufacturer will be willing to invest in development.

In the meantime, if this stuff doesn't take off, then the manufacturer of this wireless charging system won't have sufficient money to invest in building further converters for other devices. The trick for them will be in deciding which devices would sell the most - thus they've got converters for iphones, DS, and a few others to start with.

Doug

Comments on Powermat wireless chargers unleashed into the atmosphere, for real

Many thanks for the useful explanation of how the mat functions...

Abimbola Akanwo

Comments on Powermat wireless chargers unleashed into the atmosphere, for real

there is an international body working on a standard. www.wirelesspowerconsortium.com

soccermoes

Comments on Powermat wireless chargers unleashed into the atmosphere, for real

Additionally, there is inherent loss in wireless charging, it wastes electricity. But for the target market, smart phone users, likely you need to also dock your phone for synching too. In that case, if you have a USB wire for docking, then you are likely not going to need the mat for charging. I could see it more useful for lower-model phones that don't need to sync, but then they don't seem to have adapters for those phones (yet I suppose).

Also, that iPhone case would drive me nuts. Bad enough most cases don't let me easily dock my phone in my car - I have to open up something to slide it in the cradle I have there - same as at home. But the micro port will mess things up more too. One of the nice features of the iPhone is the iPod functionality. Any accessory that makes that more of a pain for my drive is one I will pass on.

That said. If there was an adapter for my camcorder, my laptop and my DSLR, then I would be dropping them on this pad every day.

Brian!

Comments on Powermat wireless chargers unleashed into the atmosphere, for real

Your last sentence makes a lot of sense...thanks...

Abimbola Akanwo

Comments on Powermat wireless chargers unleashed into the atmosphere, for real

I would be excited for "wireless" charging stations, especially if they were as awesome as one of Nikola Tesla's wireless power concepts. however i still see all these setups and shake my head to the bulky slide on case looking adapter for them. i hate adding things to bulkify my gadgets, whats the point of having a slim ipod touch in my pocket if i have to have a bulky sleeve on it to charge it.

You might say "well you can just plug it in only when you want to charge it" but if thats the case, then why did i even purchase the thing in the first place. if i have to plug it in every time it defeats the convenience of being able to place the gadget down and charge it.

Maybe if it was something similar to the rechargable batteries in my Wiimote where it repalces the original battery and battery cover and integrates it into the original form. then i would be on board with the whole thing.

chris

Comments on Powermat wireless chargers unleashed into the atmosphere, for real

Am i the only one who thinks these mats are rubbish!?

Not only do you have to don a rubbish sleave, but it practically renders the phone unusable while it's charging! It eliminates the need for me to plug in my iPhone to charge it and lets me just set it down on the mat that's on my nightstand to charge it. The one I have is a bit cheaper than the Powermat one (I think it was ~$80 for the mat and phone case) and, except for the little nub at the bottom is the best case I have owned for my iPhone.

That being said, there are still some downsides. I have to remove the case if I want to sync it to iTunes or charge it in my car. Actually, that's really the only downside I can think of. It is more durable than the silicon Belkin cover I used to have that ripped and can't come apart like a slider case.

Andrew Moskowitz

Comments on Powermat wireless chargers unleashed into the atmosphere, for real

I think alot of you are missing the bigger concept in this device. It is inexcusable. They make a charging back for my wife's Blackberry and I have a case on my iPhone already that I could easily switch for this charging case.
