It looks too similar to the HP Touchsmart IMO, but that's to be expected. That keyboard and mouse combo detract too much from the computer's appearance, but I'm just nit-picking here. The stand is my problem; the display and bezel look fine otherwise. Needs more curves in order to garner even a hint of a flowing elegance that would make it more competitive with an iMac. I'd prefer an all-in-one that looked exactly like a monitor and nothing more, in order to conserve more space... just my preference.

I could see Natal expanding into products like these. I see it as a great concept for laptops/tablets where there could be a bevy of programs for people who need quick-input field use of a computer. But I can't think of any scenario where I'm likely to reach up and touch the screen on my desktop, or want anybody else to. Keyboards, mice, tablets, etc., all seem to fit the bill perfectly. I don't see a consumer demand for this (other than the novelty of it). Maybe if you needed a PC mounted on a wall, or in the kitchen -- but it seems like the HP Touchsmart never really took off or found a niche. So how does this tech make inroads into the general user population?

reisa

Comments on Gateway introduces One ZX series of multitouch all-in-one desktops

At least in my case, you've already answered it - a wall mount kitchen PC. Touch computers that have a "touch overlay" like the Touchsmart pc make it very easy to access music, video, photos, and other commonly used applications. It also makes it easy for a child to use and learn. But above that, women love these computers. When HP first released the 500 series, the Best Buy's in South Florida could hardly keep them in stock. About 4 months after the second round of 500 series came out, sales dropped a bit however that was well after the economy tanked and SoFla began feeling it. So, someone saying that these things won't sell have no clue what they're talking about. Novelty sells!

Secondly, I'm about irritated with so many people saying the all in one desktops look like Imacs. As if the Imac was the first All in One PC. Although Apple did have the Macintosh in the 80's, Compaq had one in the mid 90's. Apple then did a redesign and added bubblegum flavors to it and branded it Imac. They're all in one computers people- there's little you can do to make them look that much different with current technology. The first Imacs used crt monitors, the second ones used LCD. The first Compaqs used crt monitors, the second ones (now from hp) use LCD. That's not copying, that's using today's technology. What sets the products apart are features. HP added Touch and a TV tuner, remote control, bluetooth, blueray, etc.

One final thought- who cares about who comes out with something first? Maybe it is good business sense to let one company spend $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ on R&D and startup manufacturing costs so that someone else can take advantage of that infrastructure to have competing products (at lower prices) aka Kodak's new printers. All laptops are manufactured by Foxxcon, Quanta, and I forget the other company in China so build quality is the same. It is features that differentiate them. Although I'm not a fan of Apple, I'm happy they were able to make ITunes work because it benefited us all. Now we have a choice of where to get music ONLINE.

Although I think many of the all in ones coming out this fall resemble the HP Touchsmart, I don't care. If i worked for HP I would be flattered. I wouldn't gripe, complain and gloat like the Mac fanboys do, I would just smile and know the product I have is good because others are making similar designs. I don't think MS fans actually despise Apple, I think they despise Apple Fan(atic)boys and their arrogant elitist, and many times hostile attitudes which turns them off the Apple products in the process.

Josh

Comments on Gateway introduces One ZX series of multitouch all-in-one desktops

With the eSata, does that mean you could drop in a Ceton CableCard tuner? Let me offer, however, an alternative to this being the end of the world for this product. 3rd party companies make a killing with accessories for your favorite laptop / desktop / etc. Be it Neons, super quiet fans, a USB Hub built into a stand... (you get the idea). This design is minimalistic, which should make it easy to either fabricate my own design for putting a 45 degree sitting angle tilt on it (be it modifying the computer, adding a catch style notch into the wood of my beautiful office desk, or (and this is the ringer) Paying 29.99 at best buy / walmart / newegg etc for a 3rd party peripheral stand that offers multiple angles. Is this a good idea? yes/no?

Windows PC's do not have antivirus in them because there are THOUSANDS of 3rd party COMPANIES with huge money that do not want M$ to put them out of business. Also its a scratch my back, ill scratch yours kind of thing, where consumers are enticed to spend more money for protection. There are alot of people out there that would still pay a 3rd party company to provide the "checks and balances" even if microsoft came preinstalled with antivirus, antispyware, antimalware and it updated itself through windows update. People like to have protection, and you know microsoft isnt going to pay you back for hours of work lost because a virus slipped through its update service (but McAfee / Symantec business class AV solutions do)

TerrorismSux

Comments on Gateway introduces One ZX series of multitouch all-in-one desktops

Who says I have to hold my arms up all day? Do you see iPhone users holding their arms up all day? I certainly don't...
