When all the games are being pirated at a rate higher than the sale of the game, developers don't want to develop good games, because they will be so easily pirated. This is why Sony is trying, too bad it's not going to work considering all of the people who complain about drm are pirating motherfuckers. And don't use that "I want freedom" excuse. I can't stand pirates myself. I've always thought that, hey, if you like a band, buy their music and support them right? Same should go for devs and movie studios. I've searched torrents a few times in order to track down ancient films or shows that aren't in syndication anymore. If they were, I'd gladly watch them on my TV. I'd never download games though.

What companies like Sony need to do is make it easier to migrate games and data from one device to another rather than forcing them to buy a game again. Nothing too serious. And I was actually thinking of the App Store with that last line. Companies should be both firm and fair with their own platform environments, and yet Apple has been in so much controversy with their app approval process and what not. It's nuts. Their store, their rules, I know, but sometimes they went over the edge a bit. Me, I'm just tired of hearing other people complaining about it. What bothers me about this story is that Sony is trying to force previous PSP owners to abandon their old UMD collections if they want the Go. They should offer some sort of compromise that allows for the least amount of piracy. It's certainly possible, but practicality plays an issue too, but I digress.

And yet, I still like the look of the Go...

Maccadude33

Comments on PSP Go Rewards program hitting DRM-laced brick wall

Sorry, but all DRM schemes do is create headaches and problems for those who legitimately buy software and media while failing to stop those who will steal it anyway. Software developers have been trying to secure their software from theft via copy protection schemes ever since i bought a C64 in 1982 and they have been failing at it ever since. DRM just isn't worth it. If you pay for a song or a video, you should be able to put it on any device that you own, etc. Companies shouldn't have to force their customers into doing things against their own benefit. Pirates are a minority and will indeed get into whatever they fancy. Last I checked, the latest batch of PSP games took only a week to crack after a new DRM scheme. Might have only been 3 days if that, too.

So, what stories have you read where pirates have been thwarted by DRM? My stars, it seems I only read about everyday consumers being screwed by DRM. Imagine that! At best, DRM slows them down and the longest probably hasn't even been a month when something really formidable comes around.

Also, for the last time, a pirated game is not ALWAYS a lost sale. Most pirates are cheap and broke. Thus the cost saving measures they take. Certainly some can afford the crap they steal but not all. Buying a used game IS a 1:1 lost sale for the developers. 90% are buying the game for the first time, I'm sure, and while an original sale was made - another one has been lost. Is that a bad thing? No, but even "honest" folks can cost a game company money. So, there is no high horse to be on...

Massmass

Comments on PSP Go Rewards program hitting DRM-laced brick wall

and when you changed to cd from vinyl you got free copies...and from vhs to dvd you got free copies...and from dvd to hd free copies....oh...hang on, no you didnt, you chose to change and re-built your libraries.

g.sykes

Comments on PSP Go Rewards program hitting DRM-laced brick wall

Gee as if the PSP-Go needed yet ANOTHER reason not to buy one!

Go Sony!

Doug

Comments on PSP Go Rewards program hitting DRM-laced brick wall

@ g.sykes

You're talking about physical storage formats. It's a licensing issue; the PS3 uses up one license on downloading, and so the PSPGo has no authority to play it.

Martin

Comments on PSP Go Rewards program hitting DRM-laced brick wall

Honestly? The PSP Go's not bad. It definitely defines the word portable. What's making it suck is the fact that you're stuck with a portable console that doesn't allow you to play currently owned games. That's what the gripes really all about. It's about unnecessary incurred expenses. Yeah, there may be some bugs with the initial models but they'll get better. My sister has both the Go and the the 3000 and I keep asking her what she's going to do with both? She just looks at me with this clueless look and I say, "yeah...I thought so".

There's no way to get your UMD's on the Go which forces consumers to buy the game...again. Here's a proposal that I wonder if Sony even thought of, "Trade-ins". EB Games/Gamestop and the likes already do trade ins. Why doesn't Sony ask resellers to do a special trade in where consumers can bring back their UMD's in place of "credits". "Sony is worried of piracy" is what some of you are thinking. Traded in UMD's pretty much puts a stamp of approval that it is a legitimate copy. There's only so much that can be done to "duplicate" or create a clone of a physical UMD. There are still markers that sales clerks are trained to identify on cartridges, etc. to determine if the chassis and internals are duped or not. Once traded, all they're doing is getting the UMD back to be sent back to Sony or be "field destroyed" and exchanging the physical object with Sony credits to be used for online purchases towards the same game.

I'm sure it can't be that difficult.

Wanna see a magic trick? Wait 3 - 5 months from now for Sony to announce something similar to what I said. Once that happens, all those who already bought a digital copy of what they already physically owned will go berserk for shelling out the $'s.

Toolzy
