If you buy a kindle you basically get the US version which comes with an AT&T SIM (locked). So, because of this, every time you buy a book using the 3g data transfer you essentially racking up roaming charges. To offset this amazon charge an extra fee to cover those costs.

If they had any sense they'd just unlock the device and let you put any old 3g SIM in it, even PAYG.

Which means you're paying an additional $2 per book download, and a whopping $5 per WEEK on top of any newspaper subscription fee. And emailing them a file to convert costs $1 internationally, regardless of whether the conversion is successful or not.

In addition, when ordering the Kindle, you have to handle all import fees, transport costs from the US etc yourself...and many ebooks in the Kindle store aren't even available outside the US due to copyright issues.

...so, in short, Amazon might as well not have bothered with this "international" release.
