We do overpay for our phones, there is no reason why the iPhone should cost more than $200 off contract. Well that is true, but then there's no reason why I should be $589. I think the price attributes to the cost put in to manufacture the device, and subsidization is used to lower that price as the money payed from a monthly contract over a 2 year plan would cover the phone unlocked.

iSuppli put the cost of materials of an iPhone at about $180. Granted, Apple still make a fortune on it, but take into account engineering, design for hardware/OS, testing, etc, there's no way Apple would sell it for $200.

The Parm Fre probably sits around $20, design involved looking at a real Pre and seeing what parts preexisted for sale to match the shape, then filling it with basic phone hardware and installing the cheapest OS possible.
