Get a bigger QA department, a more comprehensive set of user tasks, make sure your programmers take the time to consider what effects their code changes might have to the bigger system, and if you really really have to: do the unthinkable and have a public Beta. No, that's too drastic. A beta would show that Apple software doesn't come out of Jobs' behind perfect - it actually gets written. Have a public RC. In fact, take what normally passes for an RTM build and release that as an RC, and stop treating your early adopters like beta testers. Microsoft had a bug that corrupted ID3 data in MP3s in Windows 7 (which also wasn't hatched perfect). Know why it didn't make it to RTM? Cause it got caught in the pre-release versions. Suck it up and do the right thing.

Mark

Comments on

At least Engadget didn't try to downplay it and make it seem insignificant like another tech blog.

*raises eyebrows at Gizmodo*

crazacool

Comments on

I'm laughing so hard at this. What is not recommended is enabling a guest account at this point. I guess you could argue that there are many users whose data is at risk but it's not clear how many users have lost data because the actions needed to reproduce error which causes data loss are not that common and it is also not clear how probably a crash of the kind needed to have data loss is. Does this happen every time or one in 10k? While the guidance to not guest accounts at this point applies to a very large group, you can't say that many people have been affected. Affected would mean the suffered data loss.

@jordan
Data loss from Apple is always going to be a big story because its so unusual. When it comes to the OS erasing data it doesn't really matter how much it is happening. What if you had all of your data erased, all your children's pictures while they grew up, all your documents, all your music, by your operating system and then when you go to restore from your Time Capsule, oh wait, it's dead. There are hardly any problems for most users. Me, my laptop plows through its batteries more quickly than before, but I've also gotten outstanding performance and speed in return. I did have to modify the ISO to run in 64-Bit mode for my MBP since Apple was so kind to exclude native 64-Bit support on older, but capable, Intel Macs, but it worked well. I, just as most people who have used it, like Windows 7. My Mac already has battery issues, so clearly it was bound to throw a fit or two running pre-release software. Thus it was probably my fault. As I recall, the only real problem I had was with backwards compatibility with programs. Not a huge issue now though.

I think you need to chill for a bit (no pun intended).
