on Engadget, but as for myself, I think the 3D laptop idea is fantastic. I'm not sure that this is the implementation that I'd want (I don't think there's a real barrier keeping them from using 120Hz displays at laptop sizes and resolutions), and I'm not sure that my next purchase would be an Acer (after the recall they've issued on my current model), but as for 3D laptops in general? Bring them on!

I know you guys feel the need to editorialize most of your posts (don't know WHY you feel the need to do that, but I have observed it repeatedly so it's obviously the case), but just because this isn't something YOU want (or think you want), it doesn't follow that there's no demand for this. And even if people are ragging on them now, if the technology comes out and works well, the interest will definitely follow.

old_fogie_late_bloomer

Comments on Acer claims Aspire 5738DG as its first 3D laptop, we worry over the future of things

Why in gods name would you want this? It has to start somewhere to get to the point that we don't even think about things being in 3D, they just are. 3D movies and games are perfect to adapt the tech and I have no idea why there is such resistance for AN OPTION to watch or play games in a different way. All you people (yes YOU PEOPLE ;P ) that can't handle change can still watch and play games the way you always were. 3D is an option that I think adds to the experience. But don't take my word for it, maybe consider the praise of master filmmakers like Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, Ridley Scott, and James Cameron or maybe see a 3D movie using good projectors (Like Sony's 4k Digital 3D projector) or play a game using Nvidia's 3D Vision where it actually renders a view for each eye. It's impressive stuff if you see it done right.

Chibi Chaingun - blackhivemedia.com

Comments on Acer claims Aspire 5738DG as its first 3D laptop, we worry over the future of things

3D is great for entertainment, but lets keep it there. I saw Final Destination in 3D and it had some nice entertainment value to it. However building this into computers would lead somebody to start making 3D user interfaces which sadly the vast majority of all computer users just simple couldn't handle. There are enough people that just have problems using a mouse on a 2D screen, through dual monitors at them and they complete freak out because they loose track of their mouse. Start giving them a 3D desktop to use and they will loose all sorts of stuff including where they left their mouse pointer. Just image the support calls, "Hello I can't seem to find my documents. It was just here a second ago and now its gone." Turns out they accidentally dropped it behind My Computer, and they just didn't look behind their yet.

Nice feature for games and such where the sense of being in a 3D environment and moving around through it are expected, bad for general purpose computing.

kal326

Comments on Acer claims Aspire 5738DG as its first 3D laptop, we worry over the future of things

@Kal326: There's so much wrong with that that I don't even know where to begin.

A 3D UI, done right, could be EASIER for non-geeks to grasp, because it's closer to real-world experience. Granted, we have a long way to go before we'll hit the "a-ha" moment of 3D in a PC. It took us, what, 3.11 versions of Windows before it caught on? But thanks to pioneers who saw the potential of a graphical UI, and worked for years to develop it, I don't have to write this in a 80-column text window.

Kudos to Acer for taking this first step. It sounds pretty cool to me. I just cant see why it would be beneficial to anything. I really dont like wearing glasses in the first place so that is a damper, plus, what is the reason for having a 3d effect? If it is popping out of the screen and it really looks like things are coming at you, then that is a huge bonus in the gaming department. I just wonder how the response time is since it is thru an application and not the gpu.
