Lots of bugs, some of them showstoppers in my book, for seemingly no gain other than to not buy a machine with Windows. I tried Moblin on my HP Mini 1000 and the wi-fi didn't even work. HP's MI Linux or whatever was similarly awful. I'm betting Moblin will also flop unless it gets a massive marketing push from Intel but I don't see that happening. Like it or not, if you know what you're doing, Windows just works most of the time.

Snackie Onassis

Comments on Dell Mini 10v reviewed with Ubuntu Moblin Remix

Moblin beta booted off an SD card seems to run Hulu a LOT better than OSX off the internal hard drive (MSI WindU100) though otherwise the browser is kinda weak. If you've been using WIndows or OSX for years though it's a bit confusing. Kids and the elderly would like it, I think. Bulletproof though, doubt it. Too many small problems popping up that many people can't fix on their own. Besides, if you're on the internet, bad things can happen to you no matter what your OS.

Snackie Onassis

Comments on Dell Mini 10v reviewed with Ubuntu Moblin Remix

I still do not understand why most netbooks don't use a tracking stick ( nub mouse )

Steve

Comments on Dell Mini 10v reviewed with Ubuntu Moblin Remix

I hated that on a Dell that i used for work. Those nubbins have vanished from most products for a reason. They are useless. 90% of everyone hates them. They are the single most difficult to use cursor control ever invented. Every single IBM Thinkpad at the company I used to work for had those and every single user chose to take a corded mouse (300+ users) with them rather than use those stupid nubbins.

Now I can't say that a track-pad is that much of an improvement. Especially if you do graphic design like I do. What I would like to try out is a track ball similar to what is used on some cell phones now. My G1's trackball is great. If they created one for laptops and netbooks and made it say about 50% bigger and put it where one of the nubbins goes that may be a great alternative. Don't know as I've never tried one configured like that. Although I do remember when most notebooks had trackballs where a trackpad goes now. Those were much bigger and skipped like a $2 mechanical mouse with dirt in it.

XenoTheSilly

Comments on Dell Mini 10v reviewed with Ubuntu Moblin Remix

this is a netbook, i don't expect the mouse to be use for fine tuned control. the nub mouse would allow for a larger keyboard for a more natural feel. the mouse just has to click links. I guess i'm just one of the 10% who like them, but for this form factor i feel it is appropriate. I like Sony VAIO P-Series for this reason (sans the price), but would not nessisarily place the nub in the middle of the keyboard. perhaps just on the edge.

Steve
