There's some very nice Android phones coming out, the initial hype over the Pre on its American launch frankly died on its arse and this is WAY overpriced for the UK market, especially with the news that the iPhone is on its way to Orange and Vodafone in the next few months thus giving at least the hope of a price drop.

It's a shame but Palm really needed to get the Pre out the door much earlier, certainly before the wave of Android / Win Mo 6.5 handsets came flooding out. I don't know a single person who's even slightly excited over the Pre launch and I can see it being a massive flop, especially with the very public issues O2 has had with its 3G network recently. Don't get me wrong, I hope that it does well, I've always liked Palm's products and want to see them survive. I just fear it's all too little too late now.

Steve

Comments on Palm Pre now available on O2 UK

What I don't get is why Palm didn't push the GSM Pre simultaneously to the CDMA version...and it seems history is repeating itself with the Pixi. This is an old & obsolete handset now and not worth half the money they're asking. If the vastly superior hardware of the HD2 can be had for free on a £30 p/m tariff for 18 months with 'Unlimited' web, and a decent amount of minutes and texts (300+ Mins & 300 + texts) then the asking price for this is crazy.

The only thing that would encourage me to choose this handset would be an extensive update for the same money - 16-32 GB on board, improved build quality & materials, Micro SD card and a better keyboard. And there has been no hype here about the Pre. And the hype when the original iPhone was released was immense. The queues outside apple stores at midnight showed that to be honest.

Rory Mitchell

Comments on Palm Pre now available on O2 UK

Sinking???

I think the USA will run into similar issues over the next 50 years... It seems there are only a handful of distinct smartphone groups over here: 1) iPhone, 2) Android, 3) Blackberry (although I still question whether or not they are smartphones) 4) S60, and for mainly business users 5) WinMo - Its a saturated market, people using their smart phones have developed a bond by now, iPhone has the interface and ease of use, Android is customisable beyond belief, and Blackberry is secure and manageable for businesses. What does palm bring to the table? In North America s60 is about as far from 'business phone' as you can get. Blackberries are tied to everybody's corporate networks via BES and nobody would consider a tiny screen with a non-qwerty keyboard 'business oriented'. I know that of course Nokia has changed that considerably and has Qwerty phones and nice big-assed screens - but Blackberry is embedded here in the corporate world because they've been doing nothing but (until recently). Strange to think of Nokia s60 devices as business phones....but I get that it is a completely different environment and evolution there. I'd guess that for businesses in NA, it is Blackberry first, Windows Mobile 2nd, and iPhone 3rd. I've never heard of anybody or any company in NA using s60 as their phone of choice for business.

Not a judgment at all - just an observation about how different things are!

SHoe

Comments on Palm Pre now available on O2 UK

I meant WinMo for business users, not S60!
