Verizon's anti-iPhone gets its first commercial: 'Droid Does' (update)
We knew Verizon Wireless would soon be throwing caution to the wind in an effort to sway uncommitted smartphone buyers towards Big Red, and it looks like the November-bound Motorola Droid will be VZW's anti-iPhone. The spot, which launched tonight and can be view in its entirety after the break, is a 30 second clip that begins by mocking Apple's cutesy music and iconic font typically seen in iPhone plugs. It reels off a number of things that the iPhone can't do, and then abruptly goes into full-on tease mode by flashing glimpses of a robot-controlled future and a tagline that simply states: "Droid Does." No shots of the actual Motorola Droid (or Sholes, as it was known in the past) are shown, but a dedicated teaser portal has already been erected; through that, we're told that the phone will boast Android 2.0 and a 5 megapixel camera. At this point, we'd say the gloves are definitely off -- AT&T, have anything to say for yourself, or is the iPhone doing just fine on its own?
Update: See that alien counter that's just sitting on the lower end of the teaser page? As reader Craig N. and a number of others have pointed out, a quick perusal through the page's XML file reveals the end of that timer to be October 30th -- not that we expect to be waiting that long for more Droid news, but it's something to keep in mind.

I watched the spot and got a chill down my back and grin. Then I read the confirmed emails picture and lol'ed.

thanks for the interesting link.

the 5th point among the most requested iphone fixes is definitely something i hope to have on the droid.
damn copy paste.
here is the 5th point i hope to have with droid:
" My iPhone sits on my desk. I get up from my desk a lot. When I get back, I continue working. Only at the end of the day, I pickup my iPhone and put it in my pocket, and I see 12 missed calls and 7 new sms messages. BlackBerry has a RGB LED that can be set to BLINK (different colours) when something happens. Like receive email from a certain email address, or a gtalk IM from a certain someone. "
It is amazing to see everyone bicker about the iphone and apple. I left verizon when they wanted to charge me 25cents to move pictures from my phone to the computer since they diabled the usb sync feaure on it. That is locked down.
I am all for competition. Bring it on! It has taken very one way to long for anyone to make a phone better than the iphone. In the end It will only make the iphone better and cheaper. Everyone owes apple some credit for setting the bar higher. I guarantee the smart phone market would not bee where it is today if it was not for the iphone.
Who wins with competition...the consumer.
Alright, as an AT&T customer I'm unfamiliar with Verizon policies so I'm hoping to see some clarifications from Verizon customers:
Android is open source thus allowing any app to be used on the phone but Verizon can limit what is allowed on their network meaning I can tether my phone to my laptop but actually accessing the internet through my phone would depend on Verizon policies allowing me to correct?
If this is the case would anyone care to explain to me V's current policies on tethering because this would be my main reason for getting an android device/ move to a different carrier.
To answer that question is somewhat difficult atm. Reason being is word is VZW policy will be changing upon release of there Andriod devices. Currently tho tethering falls under a specific data plan which IMO is way over priced. However there are ways to get around it if you are willing to spend a little time doing research. Back in the days of owning my Razr v3c I had it hooked up to my laptop for tethering and was only charge mins and no data fee. However since then they blocked that hole so it no longer can be done. Plus they changed calling plan since then and data fees to bill for transmitted usage unlike before when you just had mobile web service and while online it was just chewing up your mins from the calling plan. So in those days if you used it say at night or weekends it costed you nothing to do it. Now as another example tho like on the current device I'm using which runs WinMob 6.1 and has built in Wifi. I have a program called WMWifirouter which allows me to use the VZW network and hook up any Wifi device to route threw my cell and have data. Son loves it when in the car and he has his iTouch hooked up to it or his laptop playing Wow while I drive.
Bottom line is until we know there new policy after Andriod devices drop it is to hard to say what the deal will be.
The symbol countdown seems to refer to 10/28 at 12:01am (mountain time- I think it localized to time zone you view it from)
this was a change yesterday, prior to that it was pointing to 10/30
personally I will be switching. I will keep my 3gs around for some non-data apps (rather than reselling and buying iPod touch). I know this droid will outdo the iPhone for the comm features I use- gmail, gtalk, gsync, gmaps, and web browsing.
