Viewsonic debuts new range of ViewBooks, ViewBook Pros

Viewsonic's already announced a few new laptops in advance of that little Windows 7 launch, but it looks like it's saved its biggest guns for the last minute, with it now introducing a whole range of new models in Taipei. The stand-out of the lot is the company's new ViewBook Pro (pictured above), which packs a 13.3-inch display, low-power Core 2 Duo processor, and a fairly unique interchangeable optical drive / second battery into a slim aluminum enclosure. Rounding out the lot are the ViewBook 120, 130 and 140, which expectedly boast 12-inch, 13.3-inch and 14-inch screens, respectively, and some low-end to mid-range specs across the board (think Celeron or Core 2 Duo, 2GB of RAM, and a 250GB or 320GB hard drive). Still no word on a release over here, but it looks like the ViewBook Pro will set you back $999 or $1,099 depending on the configuration, with most of the rest running well under the $1,000 mark. Not bad.
I had a Thinkpad 600e back in the day that sported an UltraSlimBay that accepted an empty spacer (to save weight), a second hard drive, a second battery, or an optical drive. I mostly used it with the spacer to make it lighter in my backpack but loved having a second battery in there other times. That thing was great - a 13" laptop before 13" laptops were all the rage. Perfect form factor.
It's a great feature that more laptops should have, and I'm happy to see it here.
eh, it dosnt look too much like a macbook. This is totally the design ive been looking for.. the sharp ass edges on the mac hurt my wrist sometimes, so +1 on roundness :-)
Seriously a viewbook pro? I would prefer something else not so similar to you know what...

I know it's not as thin, but the Dell Latitude D series also had a removable/changeable optical/battery drive.
As have had ThinkPads for many years.

@darbear5610: I think he's referring to the names Viewbook and Viewbook pro. Honestly, I gotta agree in this case, it's an obvious attempt at copying/riding the coattails.
Its not the black keyboard, but the names, the styling, even the font.
Apple copies names like everyone else. The Zen Touch came waaay before the iPod Touch.
this is really amazing ... these days everybody tries to copy one brand. what happened with individualizm and creativism? am I the only person who things that this is kind a sad? and it must be a real living nightmare for all the mac-haters to see that their vendors start turning into mac-a-likes started with HP .. pff
I for one think aluminium cases are a great idea and i cant understand why so few has launched laptops like this sofar. Although i am .... hm, sceptic? ... about Apple in many ways, i have found myself recommending their laptops lately cause i think the battery life and alu-cases are two very solid reasons to go down that road.
Even the font looks like the MacBook series.
That's a nice-looking laptop and all, but what I'd really like is a set of those arts & crafts finches.

Well at least they didn't give it a black bezel and center the ViewBook Pro name under the display in silv ... oh, wait.
Damn it, they copied everything. Including the font and the color scheme!! Even the black bezel!! That's pretty lame. I own a 2.66Ghz 15 inch MacBook Pro, i also own a PC. and i appreciate the differences and the pro's and con's. We'd love to see some originality from both sides please. Shit like this - pretty lame.
They may have ganked the name, but I saw quite a few differences. Personally, I think it looks better. With those options, I would buy one. Black of course.
I don't like the fingerprint reader right in the centre of the trackpad buttons. Seriously, most people only use those to showoff the first time they get the laptop.
Most people use the fingerprint reader to sign into windows. I know I do.
