Windows 7 launch event with Steve Ballmer (watch now)
We've got our own little sit down with Steve Ballmer coming up later today, but right now he's making things completely official at the Windows 7 launch event in New York City, and you can watch it live after the break.
Update: And that's a wrap. Hit up the link below to get caught up on anything you might have missed courtesy of The Wall Street Journal's liveblog.

i was beginning to wonder where all the windows 7 coverage was
Nowhere.
Microsoft does not use such dirty tricks Apple uses.
Engadget does only get paid by Apple to write an article about every fart Apple makes.
Also does only Apple hire people dedicated to spam news sites like this or other with stupid Apple comments. Or isn't it strange that almost no article gets 'digged' on this site, but as soon as an Apple news pops up, even if it's the most boring article, it gets at least 100 diggs and comments.
LAUNCH EVENT AT LUNCH!
Frank, your tinfoil hat is crooked....
@Frank, the majority of those comments are knob jockeys like you bringing up Apple at every opportunity. Well done, you were first this time.
If you want to see the October 23, 2009 (update of Win 7) It seems Microsoft used Macbook Pro (notebook) as a props-background for promoting Windows 7 on NBC's show?
Hilarious video and a detailed article if this is a fact or fiction: http://pinoytutorial.com/techtorial/nbcs-today-show-windows-7-featured-on-a-macbook-pro/
Administrative rights suck...I'm at work and can't download silverlight :p
x2
I can't view UStream at work, either. Lame. :|
Steve Ballmer, acting as if he's been under a rock for the past century.
tether your work comp to your phone and disabled local internet connection like the rest of us.
I have access to install stuff on my work machine - but I have no desire to install Silverlight and not listening to Ballmer won't ruin my day.
I'm good.
there are ways around that you know. oh i know you know, just don't let your boss catch you.
Why are you using Silverlight?
Nobody uses Silverlight.
Because streaming through flash is worthless and a resource hog. The newer versions of Silverlight is the way to go for website streaming.
Yes, my computer just chokes trying to play those Youtube videos. Thank god there are more plugins to download!
Everyone who streams Netflix begs to disagree.
And the more obvious, Silverlight is MS' work and I must admit, much better than Flash :)
What the fuuuuuuuck! Engadget!
I won't download Silverlight..
Fuck this..
I'm sure Netflix users also have Flash installed.
I get why they are using Silverlight in this instance (being a big Microsoft-related event), but I also think that it's an unnecessary inconvenience for users. You shouldn't require people to download extra plugins for their browser unless it's absolutely necessary. And in this case it isn't.
Anyway... I look forward to the download. Have to watch it in HD :-)
@Ryujin, I thought that's why they invented HTML5?
I hope you realize the hypocrisy of having flash installed but purposely avoiding to install silverlight
@Theli
Try telling that to the version of Quicktime that's clogging up my computer
For live streaming Silverlight is better, what your talking about is just streaming video. Its a plugin not that hard to use.
@Galley
I agree html5 is promising, but thats not to say that Silverlight is worthless.
But I don't want silverlight...
But nobody cares what you don't want
it's really much better than flash.
Better than flash and won't bring your computer to a screeching halt!
It's like you're speaking directly from MS... better or not its still one more piece of crap viewer to install. When the usage shifts from mostly flash based to mostly silverlight I'll think about it. But until then, fuck off.
Well Bill, if everyone had your convoluted ideology, then the technology world would never progress with better standards.
Go Ballmer, enlighten us oh bald one. Is it just me or is he losing weight? I'm a huge fan of MS but Ballmer just always hits me as a car saleman. Good man nonetheless.
A car salesman? http://www.downloadsquad.com/2009/10/11/microsofts-ballmer-expects-windows-7-effect-on-new-system-sales/
I think he was referring to this.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGvHNNOLnCk
Yeah, it was a joke, but Ballmer seems way too comfortable doing this skit.
That video never ceases to make be laugh. I wish he'd do one of those for Win7.
Yo, detox, if you'd have clicked my link, you'd have seen that the video is embedded in that post. I was simply to lazy to actually find it on youtube, so I found the DownloadSquad link.
"Yo, detox, if you'd have clicked my link, you'd have seen that the video is embedded in that post."
My mistake. It looked like your link was something about Windows 7, which is why I didn't click it.
Why did you click on this article then?
"Why did you click on this article then?"
Uh, to read about Windows 7 and Steve Ballmer.
You sound as if you're slow, but it went like this. The original poster said something about Steve Baller being a car salesman. The first guy who responded made a link to a Windows 7 article (or so I thought), so I didn't think he was getting the joke, so I gave him the link to Ballmer's car salesman video. Understand now?
Windows 7 ftw
if you check www.microsoft.com they have a cool scroll of twitter users and bloggers reviews, plus if you click to see more reviews, you can see what people are saying on twitter, facebook, digg, flickr, and other social sites. pretty cool
Yay ! I have silverlight ! I was wondering the same.... this day does not feel so special.. c'mon engadget!!
It is time to paaarty...!!! with uncle Maaaartyyy!! cuz we got a Windows 7 seminaaary!
Today is a National Geek Holiday dudes!!
Pump it up !!! Let me see your bellies with that 7 painted on !!!! hut hut!
People always think geeks and nerds are are so messed up and sometimes plain mentally impaired...... and you just gave them more ammo. Thanks!
Dude, I am sorry that is the reputation geeks and nerds have in your town, but where I live, geeks and nerds are the smart ones that know how to work up technology pretty well, You can be a catwalk model and still be a geek.
Mentally impaired.... wow....
They are showing how to make pron with windows live movie maker.
I think you will succeed into making hem get silverlight after that tease. :P
While tempting, I still don't want silverlight lol
Because they are forcing Silverlight on me, that means I WILL NOT WATCH THIS VIDEO.
Microsoft will die if they don't abandon the NT kernal. They need to go UNIX if they want to survive with the big boys.
UNIX?! OMG, please stop. Sure, we need to go even farther back in time. What we need is something completely new altogether.
dude, chill... it is just a format... So, you don't mind Flash being forced upon you? What about QuickTime? I amusr eyou will find it later on YouTube... but take a Chill Pill to stop the Hill Bill
*I am sure. Stupid iPhone keyboard.
@tikiteko,
What iPhone keyboard ? ;-)
the virtual one :D
And by "big boys" I presume you mean the competition who are struggling to get beyond 1% and 3% marketshare respectively. Sure, that old NT kernel is really holding MS back.
Silverlight is not just a format, it's a damn whole scripting/interpreting language reducing your browser security to MS levels, and it's a way for MS to make things all propriety, avoid it like the plague as long as you can, and keep it out of firefox.
And what big boys would those be? Linux, Unix, and BSD are all scattered by their fractured nature. Mac OS is just a very well engineered thorn in Microsoft's side. Meanwhile Windows is sitting there with command of the market. Unless more software developers for Windows suddenly jumpship to Apple, I don't see Microsoft changing a thing like leaving NT behind.
UNIX??? NT kernel?
what?
Microsoft has already announced that they are switching to alpha cell-based processors and implementing the VAX-open VMS core because of the strong licensing technology and reliability.
they had me till it required I install silverlight. Sorry MS - my attention is going elsewhere~
Please stay away from sharp objects.... I don't want you cuttng yourself because one video happen to be on silverligth instead of Flash or Quicktime.
its amazing how hard it is to install an activex control, isn't it.
Active X? Who uses IE anymore? Every other (current) browser is much faster than IE
ActiveX, the father of all vulnerability, and mother of the invention of viruses. and silverlight isn't activex, it's MS's version (or answer to) of JAVA/flash and is a whole language and not just a movie format.
It's very simple, there's the dumb masses, they already are loaded with silverlight, and probably use IE too and then there's those that know they don't want it, making silly statements and sneering won't convince those.
Sorry IE treats it as an activex control and other browsers its a plugin. Its still a small install that has no inherit backlash to installing it, so whats the big deal. Is your pc to sacred or is this your stand to destroy Silverlight, I prefer live streaming on Silverlight then Flash, anything else its usually flash.
I am so excited for Windows 7! I think that Microsoft is doing some amazing things right now which is good because they were really stuck in old days.
They are still stuck in the old days. They are using the same old code since back in the day. The only way forward is to recreate windows from the ground up.
Too many people watching it. It's buffering
right now they are showing media center, which i like.
however, they are touting touch screens alot. this is a beautiful hd tv right?
but look its also a touch screen, the man with the call-center face mic says.
seriously guys, I don't want to touch my TV.
I, too, have no desire to touch my monitor.
Give me a mouse-pad-sized, multi-touch tablet with LCD that rests next to my keyboard, and NOW we're talkin'. Does anybody make this, yet? (Even without an LCD?)
f*#&. can't watch b/c some mor0n decided to show this in silverlight. sigh.
So let me get this straight. You're claiming that Ballmer is running the company into the ground just as he releases what is arguably the best OS on the market today? Microsoft are on a roll with Ballmer in charge so I fail to see how you are anticipating their imminent demise.
@DarkElfa
Why don't you get Zune guy and have a threesome with Ballmer. This dude is a joke.
He has turned Microsoft more sleezy than it used to be. Its sad that you have to buy a new operating system in order to fix ultimately fix the old one.
You're right man, we should be paying for never ending upgrades to the same OS for 10 years. Oh wait, I'd be an Apple user then, hmm....
That was weak.
The last upgrade I paid for was $29 and it was built from the ground up. How much does patches and bloated old code cost you? Right. Thank you come again. Stay off my love seed.
You are a sad, diluted man Jso...
@Darkelfa
Your lack of understanding of OS versioning is quite disturbing. By your own logic you've been paying for never ending updates to the same OS since Windows 3.1 for Workgroups. You may remove your head from your anus at any time now.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_NT
I see Engadget is going all out with their Windows 7 coverage.
So not excited about this.
Been a Windows user forever, and just as Win7 is released, I've decided to switch to a Mac. Snow Leopard here I come...
Don't forget to back up your data.

"It just works".... riiiiiight....
So you've come to the realization that your only use for a computer is listening to music, surfing the web, and watching movies?
Perfect. Darwinism is working. Now you have no chance of being a productive member of society.
You're right. We should all be trying to cure cancer and not wasting time on "trivial" stuff.
Look how many devices are using Windows 7 - like Mufasa from the Lion King said: From the ant to the antelope.
Apple. remember who you are... remember...
You are blind with Apple hatred. Get a life. Call me when Microsoft finally kills of Apple with its ground break software and devices.
Better to be blind with Apple hatred than blind to Apple's ethics.
@DarkElfa
So buying out companies that compete with you are ethical. Wipe off the Ballmer love seed from your lips.
No Jso, that's business. Playing the victim while you hoard innovation, charge twice what your hardware is worth and promote your CEO as the next messiah is unethical.
lol Darkelf You are on a roll man! Good job defending the front today.
The Apple CEO comment was pretty funny :P but your arguments are quiet accurate.
I think DarkElfa has a serious case of 'teh dumb'
This guy says "pretty cool" as much as, well, you know who.
Guys that feed is from WSJ not directly from microsoft(Read the article) .Silverlight is crap but its not exactly MS's fault here.
Yeah sure, and it's coincidence the WSJ has the feed right? And spontaneously picked silverlight.
But it's clever, this way they only talk to the home-crowd and not anybody sensible.
So are you....
Silverlight? HAHA, I think not.
I love windows 7! cyprus car
Well said Deccangroove and yes Ballmer is a tool bcrider, but still not as much of a tool as Jobs...
...or you.
just so everyone knows, Balmer is throwing up the shocker.
Ah crap Silverlight? Really? Eww...
It wants me to install silverlight... no way! it wants me to use a computer... no way! it wants me to keep my eyes open and pointing at the screen. How dare you!. Damn you Microsoft! not fair!
So the Linux fanboy is calling out the MS fanboy?
I love how they're touting the wake/sleep times of the HP laptop. My 3.5 year old Lenovo T60 running XP does the same thing. It's just that people got so used to Vista taking forever that they're able to claim that it's so great/fast.
Looks like the launch video doesn't work with Moonlight.

the guys cool with me, but come on hes the CEO, i hate how he pretends he doesnt know what these things are. youre saying the entire tv pc is in that box?
